I bought my wife a Vodafone 845 for Christmas on a Smart 1 plan. Since then I have decided that an iPhone 3G is probably more appropriate.
I agree that to change I would have to pay the full price for the iPhone - I don't have a problem with this.
I spoke to somebody at Vodafone in The Palms (Christchurch) and they advised I would have to terminate the existing contract at a cost of just over $400.00 and then start a new contract due to the fact that the iPhone has different APN settings to the other phones.

Can somebody confirm if this is correct, or if there is any other way I can go about making this change.

Thanks very much for your help.

Regards
Russell

Vodafone don't sell the iPhone without a term contract so to buy one you'll need to sighn a new conmtract to do this, which they're expecting will mean you'll have to terminate the contract you've just signed.

Best bet would probably be to go and buy an iPhone elsewhere and then get a swap to a microsim on your existing contract.

Ahh I thought VF stores were still requiring contracts, whereas Noel Leeming etc sell them as is.

I went to a store in Northlands Mall and got the answer I had expected.

That is I can but an iPhone 3 and then insert the old SIM and use it. I do have to have the plan configured for iPhone, but they can do this at no charge.

Thanks very much for your responses.

Steve, it seems you can purchase a 3GS outright, but not a 4.  So since the OP was for a 3GS then purchase outright should be do-able.  Otherwise purchase a 4 from Apple online.
