Hi there. I'm trying to find out what the defined "local calling areas" are with xnet/vfx. For example, living in Wellington - would Waikane or Paraparaumu still be within the local area? This doesn't seem to be the case with Telecom, and it's not clear on the vfx website either.

Thanks - I've looked at that previously - but wondered as some providers have a more relaxed geographical view when it comes to billing. Eg. Classify all of 04 as Wellington.

TelstraClear and Telecom are the only two who do.

This occurs because TelstraClear offered it as a point of difference when they rolled out their PSTN network. Telecom followed suit by invite only offering people the same deal for free. I don't believe it's possible to now get this for free unless you're on a very old plan, you have to pay $5 per month for "neighbouring area" calling deal.

As far as I know XNet follows rules/regulations closely (referring to NAD, but also in general). One of the reasons why their stuff work well.

But something that I did not expect was with XNet you do not have to dial the area code to call someone just outside your local area (please correct me if I'm wrong, this is from memory). With Telecom (and presumably some others) at least you know in advance if you have to pay for the call, but then again VFX is so cheap that it does not really matter.

On our VFX FAQs we have an availability table which will show you the separate local calling areas we provide numbers for - http://www.xnet.co.nz/vfx/faq.shtml
Hope this helps - it should give you a rough idea of how areas close to each other are treated, for example, Paraparaumu is a separate LICA to Wellington, and calls between one LICA and another are treated as a toll call ($0.05/minute).

I think you will find that with most voip providers where you can dial into neighboring areas without dialing the area code. I know I did when I was with Xnet and even though I didnt dial the area code Xnets equipment still knew it was a chargeable call. I think with voip you are set up in your region so you can dial any 04 number without dialing an area code I am in New Plymouth 06 and I can dial Hawera without an area code. I havent tried it but Whanganui and Palmerston North are also 06 so technically should be able to call those places too.
