I'm a one week old PVR noob and loving it.

I'm running Saturn analogue into a wintv pvr-150 and then sending the picture
to a tv using the tv-out of a geforce mx440.

I have just signed up for Saturn digital and broadband and it should be installed in about 2 weeks.
Aside from being horified to find (from this forum) that the digital decoder uses crapy connectors
(although my very old TV probably makes this a mute point) , I'm worried
that I might run into some unforseen problems and my setup may not work with Saturn digital.

Surely the Saturn decoded converts the digital signal to analogue before
it sends it to the TV , or in my case, the pvr card ?
- and hence my pvr gets the same signal whether I'm on Saturn analogue or digital ?

Otherwise wouldn't I need a digital TV ?

So as far as I see it, I'd be getting a digital signal,
The decoder converts it to ananlogue,
my pvr card converts this to digital,
and my tv out converts it back to analogue.
This seems rather wasteful.

I had been thinking of upgrading my tv but it doesn't sound like it's worth it
if there is no component or s-vid.

Sorry if these are a dumb questions.

Thanks,
~art

a DVB-C card would get a digital signal, but only if saturn doesnt encode the free channels...

someone tried it before but couldnt figure out the STB's setings...

I do exactly what you were proposing in you first post, run the output of the TCL digital decoder into a Hauppauge pvr150 card...it looks ok, no better, not really any worse then what you get out of the decoder straight into a tv.

Yes somebody did try using a DVB-C card (with a smart card from a digital decoder) but there is one configuration item that he couldn't figure out to make it work (one of the signal frequencies or some such - and TCL wouldn't supply the information to him).

Unless you want to go MySky and use the PVR on there or unless TCL start telling people they can use their own DVB-C hardware then I don't think you'll be able to get away from what you initially proposed.

I run gbpvr pretty much that way except I have a PVR250 card. One of the outputs from the digital cable box goes to the PVR250 composite video in, the other goes to my HDTV.  To do unattended recording, I have gbpvr emit the remote codes to the TCL cable box to change channel at the right time using a USB-UIRT.

As for PQ - well I doubt if s-video or component would make much difference. They seem to encode the MPEG2 stream with a pretty low bit rate
