I know I'm going to come across as a complete muppet here...

I moved house a few months ago, and the new phone line was down for a few days. I bought a Vodem stick on a prepay plan. My landline was reconnected quicker than expected, and I ended up using about 100mb of the 2GB it came with.

Anyway, I have no further use for the Vodem now, and I thought I'd sell it, but now the plan is confusing me. The 2GB has expired and I thought that it would be like a prepay phone sim; you just cannot access the network until you buy a data top up.

But when I plugged the thing in it connects up to the internet just fine. And then I read the vodafone site and it says that if I use it without pre-purchasing data it'll start charging me $1 for the first 10MB and $1 per MB after that.

My question is: what account is it charging to? When I bought the thing, I paid for it and the salesman told me that once the 2GB was gone, I'd have to buy more before I could continue using it. I don't remember linking it to any account, and I don't even have a Vodafone cell.

I see people on TM selling used prepay vodems including the sim - how does that work?

There is either credit on the prepay sim which is being used when you connect at the casual rate, the 2GB hasnt expired, there is a problem with vodafone's accounting systems (doubtful), or the SIM is assigned to a postpaid account.
If you are certain it is a prepaid SIM then no hassles.
As for selling it, all they have to do is sell it as-is. The buyer just tops up the prepaid SIM, assuming it is still active, or swaps it out to do whatever they want.

The 2Gig expiry date was extended

SMS ' help ' to 756 from the Vodafone dash board

Then use the SMS commands to check the bundle balance

Your MB = Mega byte balance (guessing)

Great. So I sold the Vodem on TM, and now the buyer is complaining that there is no credit on the damn thing. He says that the credit expired after two months.

Immediately prior to listing it, (and AFTER two months since purchase) I successfully connected to the internet from it, and also used the SMS command to extract the following info:

Yr MB balance: 1980
Expire: 01/01/2012

I don't know if the guy is genuine, or whether he's trying to scam me for an extra 2GB. According to the Vodafone site, 2GB is going to cost me $120! There's no way I'm paying that.

I would have simply refunded him if he'd send the Vodem back to me, but he claims to have credited 2GB on it himself now. I don't know what to do...

Hmm, just send him what the SMS command told you and say it had credit on it before you sold it to him and you didn't use any of it, so he's probably bullcrapping you.

johnr, I'd like to know where you got the idea that the 2GB expiration date had been extended. I was just talking to Vodafone, and the guy said that he could see that it had been 'extended', but had no idea of the details. He didn't seem to have any info on the promotion other than what is currently stated on Vodafone's site, and he wanted me to give him numbers of other people who had their 2GB extended...

Also, what is your affiliation with Vodafone?
