The TCL cable goes along the other side of our street. A length of coax used to go from a convenient post over there, to a convenient post on our side of the street, and into our house. (I even got them to tuck the little grey box up in the eves, so it doesn't look ugly.)
A few weeks ago some nice blokes from Dowers came and dug some strategic holes in the street, and filled them in again (presumably putting a pipe under the road in between).  A day or two after that another nice bloke from TTL (sub-contractor to Downer, who are contractors to TCL) came along and put coax down the post on the other side of the street, through the assumed pipe, and up the post on our side.  He connected that up, and removed the old aerial cable.

Why?  I've no idea, and neither does the TTL bloke.  He agreed that we are the only customer using the new underground pipe.  Can anyone suggest why TCL would spend, maybe, $1000 or more to remove one overhead cable going across our street?  If TCL had asked, we would have been happy to contribute a few bucks to going underground from the footpath to our house, but we were never asked/told.

Maybe part of a making the street look nicer project?

Or it wasn't high enough for vehicle clearance?

New trolley bus lines going up your street soon?

All random guesses of course.

That is the favourite suggestion, but, as you say, all random guesses.  Did contemplate asking the nice TTL bloke if he could remove our Telecom wire too (hasn't been used since about a week after TCL moved into our street), but I doubt that would work.

That will almost certainly be due to compliance with latest agreed standards. Most likely the cable was too low or too close to a power line.

We had exactly the same experience. Two TCL cables were put through the air to connect to two new homes we built on our front lawn. There was already a cable connected to our original home behind the two new homes.

About a month later a trench was dug across the street and all three TCL cables were put underground. Some story was given about the cables being too low. Perhaps council demanded it be done. The power cables feeding the three houses off the same poles were not put underground at the same time - seems crazy not to do them as well if going to the trouble of digging the trench.

They do these things for a number of reasons, Maybe they wanted to run more from the lines but had hit the max?

Or maybe just prepping for the underground of overhead lines?
