As the topic above says,

Vodafone are introducing the Sharp 550SH Candybar 3G phone,
DSE have it listed presently so I suppose it will filter out to retail stores (DSE and Voda) this week.

http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/446eae0303732db6273fc0a87f9906e0/Product/View/E3418

if the link doesnt work the product code is E3418

Apart from that it is the usual wait and see as to what comes, I have no real interest in a non 3G phone from a personal perspective, W900i has been canned in NZ, 6280 is having hardware problems in Europe I read last week but a fix was iminent but it may delay it through official channels, N91 has been announced over a year ago but it is just a matter of if it makes it to market now it is on sale.

The availability of 3G handsets thus far has been a bit disappointing. I would love to get a 3G handset for the faster mobile data speeds but, because I have no interest in the gimmicks such as mobile television and music downloads, I was hoping that Vodafone may at some stage offer a 3G handset with only basic features. The Sony Ericsson V600 would have suited my needs fine but the cheapest price that I can find on it appears to be $500 at Dick Smith and, for that price, you might as well get the V800 which Noel Leeming are currently offering for the same price.

I've been very tempted to splash out on a V800 or 6630, but just can't quite bring myself to part with the cash until I can get something just a little bit cheaper.

Seems like great value for money, $500 for 3G, 1.3MP camera , bluetooth etc etc. Cant say i really like the look of it. For some reason it just looks too long.

Pity about all the delays on the real nice phones. NZ seems to be so far behind in getting new models sometimes. By the time they get here they are old.

The N series - N90, N91, N92 and N93 all look amazing, DVD quality video capture and wi-fi on the N93 (also the most stunning looking phone i've ever seen) if they make it here soon it would seriously make me consider jumping to vodafone, as long as they have a decent text deal by then

From my point of view, it shares the nice simple but elegant design of other recent offerings from Sharp. At that price I would still prefer the V800, though, because I have a slight preference towards clamshells and the V800 is also compatible with iSync which is a big plus for me.

looks good.

offtopic: i really hate how DSE put session id into the URL to show their products. Do a search for "E3418" and you should be able to find the phone mentioned.

There were plenty of deals on the V600i's before Xmas but the prices seem to have gone back up since then! I got my V600i in November for $399 and they were also included in the 2 for deal with the Motorolas for quite a few weeks which resulted in a large number of V600i's being sold on Trademe for around the $300 mark.

Interestingly, Dick Smith were selling them for $449 until recently when the price quietly went up to $499. To the best of my knowledge this handset is now end-of-line and I was hoping that I might be able to find a good deal on one, but it would appear that retailers are having no problems selling the remaining stock.

I think I will wait until the end of the year to replace my Motorola V3. Maybe with a nice black SE Walkman 850 :)

Looks like Sony Ericsson have just listed the V630 on their New Zealand site as 'coming soon'. I'll be very interested to see what the price tag on this will turn out to be. Considering that Motorola have dropped the ball with the bluetooth implementation on their recent releases, Nokia appear to have little to offer at the bottom end of the 3G market, and Samsung have no hope of gaining iSync compatibility in the forseeable future, I think there is a good opportunity for Sony Ericsson to offer a modestly priced 3G handset.

I'm also wondering if the release of the V630 will put a bit of pressure on retailers to clear out the last of the V800s. Does anyone know what the inventory situation is with the V800 at the moment?

Neat, the V630i looks like a great 3G upgrade to my K750i, amazingly it's even smaller and lighter (wasn't looking forward to the K800i being bigger). Maybe there will even be 3G coverage in Gisborne by xmas? (ha)

I couldn't give you specific numbers regarding V800 stocks but there are definitely a few around and they on clearance at most retailers (DSE. Noel Leeming) The V630 looks like a decent handset essentially rebranding the v800/v600 feature set, I think off the top of my head it uses Sony's new M2 proprietry storage which is approx mini-sd/micro-sd size.

The Sharp 770SH is due Tuesday (June 20) for $599, a slim form factor clamshell with 1.3mp camera

Personally I am quite disappointed the W900i never made it to these shores
