I got a 2GB data bundle added to my Vodafone prepay account on 10th March. On 11th, I enabled mobile data to send a couple of tweets through the Twitter Android app then disabled until Friday night. After hearing the news of the Japanese quake I enabled data again and spent some time on Twitter and reading the Civil Defence updates, with a quick check of GMail in between.
While I was doing this, my friend was also on with his mobile data through his Vodafone plan. Same thing the next day - both of us visiting the same sites.
Each time, after using data for a short time, I disabled data completely and switched the phone (HTC Desire HD - he is using HTC Desire) over to 2G only. I always check by dialing *#*#4636#*#*and making sure data connection is fully off in Android core.
My friend used less than 100MB data with the same length of time & same sites using data as I was. My data went down by 1.6GB.
I received an SMS from Vodafone on the night of 12th, saying I had 400MB left. The phone has been on Wifi since the afternoon of 13th, yet data is now down to 271MB.
This seems a disproportionate amount of data to disappear & I can't figure out how it could happen. Last year, I was on unlimited data in France for awhile and was using my phone for email, Twitter, Google maps & navigation every day but it took me 2 weeks to get to 2GB data use. 1.6GB in a day here???!!!
No streaming, no updates, no downloads... its just weird.
To be honest, I'm not sure if I should be posting this here or in the Android forum. But since I know how to block data use & have been doing so on this phone for months I'm wondering if something is going squiffy with Vodafone's data monitoring. I don't understand how data use has gone down again while the phone has been connected to Wifi with no mobile data enabled. Anyone got an idea about what might be happening?
