I got a 2GB data bundle added to my Vodafone prepay account on 10th March. On 11th, I enabled mobile data to send a couple of tweets through the Twitter Android app then disabled until Friday night. After hearing the news of the Japanese quake I enabled data again and spent some time on Twitter and reading the Civil Defence updates, with a quick check of GMail in between.

While I was doing this, my friend was also on with his mobile data through his Vodafone plan. Same thing the next day - both of us visiting the same sites.

Each time, after using data for a short time, I disabled data completely and switched the phone (HTC Desire HD - he is using HTC Desire) over to 2G only. I always check by dialing *#*#4636#*#*and making sure data connection is fully off in Android core.

My friend used less than 100MB data with the same length of time & same sites using data as I was. My data went down by 1.6GB.

I received an SMS from Vodafone on the night of 12th, saying I had 400MB left. The phone has been on Wifi since the afternoon of 13th, yet data is now down to 271MB.

This seems a disproportionate amount of data to disappear & I can't figure out how it could happen. Last year, I was on unlimited data in France for awhile and was using my phone for email, Twitter, Google maps & navigation every day but it took me 2 weeks to get to 2GB data use. 1.6GB in a day here???!!!

No streaming, no updates, no downloads... its just weird.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I should be posting this here or in the Android forum. But since I know how to block data use & have been doing so on this phone for months I'm wondering if something is going squiffy with Vodafone's data monitoring. I don't understand how data use has gone down again while the phone has been connected to Wifi with no mobile data enabled. Anyone got an idea about what might be happening?

Is this handset supplied by Vodafone? Is it using an original ROM? Do you install apps from the market only? Did you have Hotspot on while using mobile data?

Not supplied by Vodafone. Original ROM, not modded. Apps are only from the marketplace and the only new app in 3 months is APNdroid. Hotspot has never been used.

Mobile data - off

Synch - off

Background data - off

Checking through core Test shows all data off

GSM only - on

The main reason I think its not related to the handset and/or Android is this - 90% of the time my phone is on wireless through my home router. My monthly bandwidth allowance is 10GB. If the phone was running data through wireless at the same rate as it did last weekend then my bandwidth would be gone in a week, but its not.

Yesterday, I replaced the Vodafone APN with a bogus one. Data use stopped. Note: I've not done that in the past 3 months & hadn't had data disappearing until I got the 2GB pack.

I suggest you install SPB Wireless Monitor. See what applications are using mobile data, and which APNs are being used.

Really hard to get to Vodafone when you have a third party supplied handset. We previously had an instance of an insistent user who claimed wrong usage recorded, only to find out later his Chinese-made and purchased handset was calling home every day to China Mobile to check for updates... This was only found out because the user authorised JohnR to put a trace and the traffic was identified.

My best advice is to use SPB Wireless Monitor for a few days and see what you can find...

Changing a phone to 2G/GSM only will not stop mobile data as the packet switched traffic will just go over the GPRS network.

Thanks. I'll get the SPB Wireless Monitor and see what happens.

Discovered something interesting - if I remove the Vodafone APN the network(?) puts it back. I'd been deleting it when not using data to prevent any background processes from connecting.

I don't seem to have lost any data since I replaced it with a bogus APN.

HTC support told me that with the settings I use its not possible for data connection to occur but obviously something had to be getting through. Hopefully, SPB Wireless Monitor will pinpoint it. 1.7GB going out is a HUGE amount!

After 5 days monitoring, no data has been transmitted. I reset the bogus APN back to the Vodafone APN on the first day so that my phone was set up exactly as it had been when the data was disappearing.

I have no idea what happened but whatever it was seems to have stopped now.
