Is it possible to use a telstraclear tv decoder box at another property (obviously connected to cable as well) or do they do something at their end as well?

Would be keen to watch the rugby live, but only have cable internet connected, but mate has a decoder he isn't using.....

i think they activate the hardware id to each cable exchange. i knew this because they called up the service desk to activate the hardware decoder then few seconds later, the signal came through. they also track using smartcard.

I'd be keen to know this too. Take his decoder, plug it in and find out...

I know that the cable modem works for internet puposes at another property (and usage is assigned to the original account) but i haven't tried it with the TV decoders

Assuming the decoder is still being paid for (ie still active) then it will work OK.

Cable modems will work anywhere as well as it's the MAC address of the modem linked back to the account. Locations of cable modems are logged backed to a node when installed so that TCL can balance the number of users on a node to stop overloading.

This should work as all decoder boxes have a serial number (bit like a MAC address) that Saturn use to send commands.
As long as it is still being paid for then they will not have sent a deactivation code, so it should work where ever. Though I am unsure how many head-end systems Saturn have, otherwise it would only work on the same head-end system.

As everyone is more or less on the same bit of coax (within a suburb at least), Saturn can't tell the difference between two different connections to it anyway

i think if it is moved within the same zone/suburb, as all coax connections go into same cable exchange.

but if you move from say, Riccarton to Addington within chch, or to Kapiti, then i doubt it will work. As they are IP dependant, and each exchange has different IP gateway. I did this as I tried to use my account at my friend's place by replacing IP address and gateway info, and it won't even connect. (this is 2 years ago and was just testing cable modem)

You may able to get analogue channels (Sky Movies etc) , but not the digital channels (Food TV or some digital only channels).... not too sure...

hope someone care to give that a try, or perhaps a TCL insider can give us some idea?

could you detail how was the "borrow" carried out? how far apart are you at your mate's place? etc?

would be good to learn and see how this was carried :-) good for future usage.

Decoder unplugged from his cable
4.5km to our place
plugged in
worked

of note, i had first ensured that i could get the free to air channels over the cable. (needed to plug the connector into a customer out port in the box outside house)
all the cable channels my mate subscribed to i.e. sport etc. worked perfectly once the decoder was plugged in

added snacks, beers and won $125 for our betting syndicate by picking the crusaders to win by 7

When you say box outside house, do you mean the grey box screwed to the side of the house, or the large green one on the road?
