I want to build an SMS alert system with a Vodem so my staff and I can be notified when certain systems fail on my network.  All my alerts are currently by email but it relies on a working SMTP server on my network and connectivity to the outside.  Using a Vodem means I can also be notified when our network connection is broken.

My plan is to use a PC / Laptop / server running windows, connected to my internal network to receive notifications by email (or SNMP), and with a vodem that will send txt alerts.

Is there any of such solution already available in the market?  I don’t want to reinvent the wheels if I can buy something off the shelf.

There are a large number of apps that will do precisely what you want, but probably none that will work with a Vodem. Most USB modems don't support standard AT command sets for sending and receiving SMS mesages.

Your best bet is something like NowSMS and an external Wavecom RS232 or USB GSM modem. These things are literally as cheap as chips on eBay.
