Should I join now or would it be better to wait for some kind of deal?

Word of warning for Byw*fi users (video accelerator); it uses a lot of P2P traffic.

They have some great deals going on at the moment (in my area at least Im not sure if htey do them else where).
As everyone must be sick of me saying by now, Im getting TCL on the 27th and will most definately be blogging about the installation etc after the fact.
I have a post around here somewhere saying exactely what special deals Im getting and what its saving me etc
I'll look when Im done "studying" and such and such...

Just done a change of address with TCL and I found out that they don't do any internal-wall wiring. I wanted them to put the cables up through the loft, then drop them down internal walls, but they said it's not their policy to do that.

So just a warning - you either have to have cable on the outside of your house, going into your basement and then up through the floor, or pay for an electrician to do internal wall drops. Has anyone with concrete foundations (no basement) done a TCL installation? I'd be curious to see how they do that.

To be fair to TCL, after getting an electrician to do the internal wiring, I can see why TCL don't do them - it can be quite difficult, depending on the type of walls you have.

i have no problem getting electrician to come and do that after TCL has done installation. I think it is also a wise idea that TCL doesn't do wiring but basic installation as you pointed out that electrical wiring is quite complex and should not handled by any novice.

And also, for TCL, it means that they can easily train new installer without having to put them through electrical tradeskill.

Internet is my backyard...

Yeah, I agree, but the problem is that TCL rocked up on Saturday, said "can't do that, get an electrician", did my phone, but left me without internet and TV. So I had to arrange an electrician, then get TCL to come back to do the rest. So quite a delay, basically. If I'd known beforehand, I could have arranged an electrician to co-ordinate with the TCL install and then all would have been good. So this is just a warning to others.

Maybe I'm addicted to my fast internet and am suffering withdrawal symptoms.... I also missed the All Blacks game, so am not in a good mood :-(

yeah I know it is a pain that you cannot get on the net or cable tv... that's why i haven't bothered getting electrician in! LOL!

We will want to put few more power points for all our gadgets in our room... and when we do that we'll be putting the cable into the wall too. easier for future "move around" :-D

I'm going to join today. I just wanted to know if it would be better to wait for a plan with $100 off a router or something like that. I don't know what will happen about the installation because we don't have basement access as it is a two-storey house.

TCL have never done any deals like that in the past so I doubt if they would start soon.

TCL used to have a monthly modem rental charge, but a couple of moths ago they dropped this in their new plans. This is what your friend was probably refering to.

Telstra is coming tomorrow. Our house is two-storey and they said they can install cable even though they can't get under the house. I will be at school while they come so is there any information I need to get to use cable? Will they need to go on the computer to install it?
Should I leave a note asking for my IP address, subnetmask, gateway and DNS servers?

They will need to get inside the house to install the cable and the modem. They can use their own laptop to test the line, and you then need IP address, gateway and DNS server to configure on your PC or router.

I forgot to add that my dad will be at home so they can get inside ;)
Will I need to get that information from them then or could I call up telstra in the future?
Also, will the connections for phone, internet and digital tv be different? Will I need three connections if I have all three devices in one room?

shouldn't tink they would put 3 connections in unless you wanted. It is possible to split the same cable into several connections, but the quality would suffer. Id just leave it up to the techniciam as he has all the knowledge and testing equipmnet to set up the best connection for your needs.

I have 3 connections in my house. From the demarc they split the cable into three outlets. Two are used for cable TV and one for the cable modem. The connection to the cable modem I split so I can access the analogue TV signal to record on my PC for those occasions when I need to record more than one channel at once so the PVR is already recording something. Quality is fine. I would suggest you purchase high quality splitters and if you can, make sure the F connectors are using compression fittings - not just the Dick Smith screw on type. You will get signal leakage otherwise which can impact signal levels
