Just incase anybody isn't aware there are currently severe network issues affecting TCL's network and Paradise.Net since early this morning. Some sites are accessible and work fine, others just timeout. Interestingly enough it's possible to connect to some sites (including Geekzone) but not Paradise's own webpage or mail server or a large number of NZ sites but international traffic seems to be OK.

Yes, you can load Geekzone, but only partially load images. The outage is still going on at the time of this post...

Couldn't access their page. I waited for 45 minutes on the line, and the CSR wouldn't confirm there was an outage to begin with. After lots of talk he told me an outage was in progress and the problem should be fixed by early afternoon - it did come back later, at about 4pm.

They should have a recording on their voice system, instead of making people wait 45 minutes on the phone.

Exactly. Trust me - it has been suggested many many times

How about this for a load of rubbish

"A TelstraClear spokesperson says the outage is related to upgrades to its network that involved physical change-over of some equipment. "Some of our private IP customers have also had some delays and lack of service," says the spokesperson."

That spokesperson should be fired!

There might be more truth in the matter than you think. Would you prefer a canned Telecom response? "Due to unforeseen circumstances service was affected for a few customers, but it's all been resolved now and normal service is restored"

Why not just be honest?

"Our network is broken, most people will have no internet or be experiencing serious timeout issues. We have no idea what is wrong but are working very hard to fix it"

Seriously though, it was 11am, the outage way underway and the CSR asked me what was the problem. At first he didn't confirm or deny an outage, and only after a few minutes he spilled the beans.

He then asked me what sites I couldn't access, and I told him "for example stuff and slashdot".

He asked me to spell stuff and slashdot, he didn't know the sites. As usuall, slash dot dot com was a problem. Geekzone was a problem, but since he asked me to e-mail him a tracert output it was easy to tell him to simply go to "the domain in my e-mail address".

My friend, I really do sympathise with what you had to put up with. If it makes you feel any better, this had the highest attention of management today :-)

My clients that are on Telstra seem to have had a lot of these types of outages over the last 12 months. I know that a few of these have now reached the point of leaving to go to other operators.

Maybe Telecom are not the worst after all.

What were they worried about, the fault or the fact that several hours into it there was no reporting or mention of it on any NZ site that I could find suggesting that very few cared?
