Looks like I am one of the latest victims of cabinetisation.
I am on the Vodafone Red Network and about a week or so back I noticed that my download speed had dropped from around 1.25MBs to 0.33MBs (10Mbs to 2.5Mbs).
According to the techies at Vodafone this is due in some way to cabinetisation by Telecom.
Suggested solution is to put me on a "wholesale network".
However nobody seems to be able to explain just what the problem is, why it happened, and how and when it can be rectified.
I am not sure that the "wholesale network" option is the correct, or even advisable, solution.
Any views or info would be welcome.

Hi, if your line is been fed from a feeder thats also got circuits fed from a nearby cabinet they you have no choice but to move to a DSLAM port in the cabinet rather than the current exchange. As Voda does not yet have DSLAMs in cabinets you have will have to use one provided by Telecom, hence a wholesale connection.

The issue is that the cabinet is significantly closer to you than the exchange, therefore the signal from the distant (therefore weaker) exchange service is interfered with by the signals eminating from the (closer therefore louder) cabinet connections. Obviuosly you are sharing the same feeder with those cabinet connections, hence you cannot avoid this issue other than move to the cabinet.

You should also expect your connection speed to increase closer to the ADSL2+ maximum by moving to the cabinet, however real throughput maybe worse off as handover limitations between Voda and TelecomWholesale are most likely to be worse than Voda's own backhaul to their own DSLAMs

You'll also get forced off the vodafone red network plans and onto their telecom wholesale plans. (This is an issue with Orcon too).

Although someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, I haven't checked the vodafone DSL plans lately. Do they still have seperate vodafone ULL vs telecom wholesale plans?

The issue has been explained above. What you might be intersted in is how the scenario happened.

When Chorus announced their cabinetisation program many ISP's who were keen on ULL gear chose to ignore warnings on midspan injection (the issue you are facing). They were keen on signing up customers on ULL plans despite warnings of what would happen. When the cabinetisation rollout started they realised the warnings were infact true and have been chasing their tails ever since having to migrate users from ULL connections back onto wholesale connections as they were cabinetised.

Some ISP's such as TelstraClear chose not to ever install a ULL customer who was going to be cabinetised and have never suffered these problems.

Thanks for the info.
That makes it a little clearer, although I am still unsure as to what I should do next.

I became a Vodafone client when they took over Ihug and I must say that, until now, I have had no cause for complaint.

I assume that responsibility for fixing this issue lies with Vodafone and not with Telecom.

Vodafone can provide your service via Telecom Wholesale equipment in the cabinet instead of their own equipment in the exchange, as they have already offered this as a solution you just need to contact Vodafone to kick off the process I imagine.

I do think they change less per month when they are able to provide the service via their own equipment, so you may have a higher (often ~$10) that previous price for the same plan.

I would double check those details with them, also whether any other plans detail would change.

It might be a good time to review alternatives, if you feel like a change.
