Wow what interesting info. I find it weird that a reseller like 2degrees can entice customers from Vodafone. Vodafone should be bettering 2degrees offerings. Personally if I were Vodafone I would have some promos tied to recharge voucher numbers(including ones purchased online) like every $20 topup voucher comes with 20 free vodafone to vodafone texts and 10 free vodafone to vodafone calling minutes that never expire.

I wonder if Telecom will push their CDMA shut off date back another 2 years because if they still have at least 1 Million CDMA customers it must be bringing it alot of revenue and alot of people would probably be angry if their cellphones stopped working and couldn't Telecom start selling the iPhone CDMA that Verizon in the USA have?

It's not like CDMA Customers haven't had any warning, it's like the whole digital TV, people will hang on until they are forced to move.

Are these net numbers? IE difference between new customers and lost customers, or just raw losses, with no new customers calculated.

They have, and better than what you suggest (quote):

2Degrees is not a Reseller of Vodafone, they are their own network. like Telecom. The only exception is they roam on Vodafones network outside of their coverage cities. Exactly the same as if you took your vodafone cellphone to AU and roam there.

A reseller is someone like Black & White who run solely on Vodafones network

2degrees is not a reseller. They have their own network, and have a roaming agreement with Vodafone where they don't have a network presence. This is not a reseller agreement.

Telecom has already announced the CDMA closing date.

I left Vodafone as their postpay plans weren't competitive with 2degrees, and even though I called a few times to ask if they could do something about it they had no interest in keeping me, so I moved to 2deg. Vodafone later increased the number of txts, but for the same price ($39) 2deg still offer 100 extra voice minutes per month.

In my experience 2degrees aren't as reliable when it comes to sms, but given the extra 100 minutes of voice i'll probably stick with 2deg so long as they fix up their systems. 100 minutes is quite significant, especially since I have no home phone. 100 extra minutes on Vodafone would cost me about $50, more than the plan cost.

You have to wonder how many of the "1 million still on CDMA" are active customers. For example I have two CDMA phones that are still connected (one bill plan) but have not been used at all in the last 12 months. There must be lots that have just been thrown into drawers and forgotten.

I know they have started disconnecting the pre-pay CDMA phones that have not been used I think in the last 6 months...so that will clear out a heap!.

The end of CDMA is fixed. The handsets will soon be in the back of the cupboard with the music cassettes and VHS tapes.

As for 2 degrees I say good on em!

My reason for staying with Vodafone (for now) is coverage where I go, and reliable international texting.

At a guess I would say that most of the customers holding out on CDMA are either near the end of their contract, low paying prepaid customers, or phones kept as spares. I would think that most smartphone users would have shifted to XT by now, if not another carrier, so an iphone wouldnt serve as much enticement, especially as it would have low resale value after the network is shut, even if they were to postpone it (assuming you could sell it offshore).

On the face of it, yeah, but many of these will be spare phones, fixed terminals, etc - remember that there are more active mobile connections in NZ than there are people

I'm not sure how the numbers get calculated but I think industry standard is to do with when the prepaid number last toped up (memory serves me it's 3 months?) or if it's a postpaid number. Your two one bill phones would be considered postpaid as they are on your main phone bill and thus would be counted. But a old "thrown in the drawer" prepaid phone which hasn't been toped up for 6+ months wouldn't.

IMHO I would get any old CDMA phones in to a Telecom Store to donate it to Starship, rather than leaving it in your drawer to gather dust.

These are my own views and don't reflect Telecom's own views.

Just saw this - they aren't going to (re)start selling phones for a network that's going to be gone in less than a year; especially an expensive handset like the iPhone!

Their cdma network does not have to close though. It was their voluntary decision to close it. Why not keep it open and start selling the iPhone4 CDMA? Maybe they could do a survey on how many customers would switch from using an iPhone on vodafone's network to theirs.

WHY would they want to sell devices on their inferior network, IF they were allowed to sell iPhones they would just sell them on their XT network....

Says who? There is a lot of cool stuff Telecom can't do until they have the CDMA network shut down to free up the spectrum. The network is already a dead loss for anything except voice since EVDO is gone and the network doesn't support SVDO.
