Hi folks,

I've seen quite a few posts about what content Xnet is locally hosting. TelstraClear and Orcon have come out in the last wee while and said that they'll be hosting steam content servers, and I was wondering if Xnet have any plans to do the same? This would make an enormous difference to me, and I would definitely consider switching ISPs based on this alone.

Cheers,

Chris

EDIT: Whoops! Found this thread. Sorry!

EDIT2: Is that thread still relevant? I looked on the Steam content server list, and saw only Affinity and Slingshot - no recoil.

It is very seldom that XNet changes terms for existing customers. The only one I can think of is in the last couple of weeks with major network changes the speed test is not free data any more.

There are still customers with free national data and after many years not getting pushed to current plans. I've had a free static IP for probably 6 years now.

So yes, 99% sure that the 8 month old thread you found is still valid.

Hi Niel,

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't suggesting that WXC had changed the terms of my plan. From what I've been reading, it seems that WXC no longer own/operate recoil. If they no longer do that, then restricting my downloads to recoil wouldn't count towards my local traffic allowance.

I did notice a large spike of local traffic earlier this month, which could have been a combination of OS X Lion and TF2, which would indicate that some content is still being hosted locally.

Recoil used to (past tense) host game servers and a steam content mirror in Xnet's data centre. Xnet un-metered traffic to these server for their customers.

Recoil's servers came under a massive ddos attack which was sufficiently disruptive that the servers we shutdown.

Recoil opted not to move their servers to a different host/DC and they basically disappeared.

Frio said on GPForums they have plans to turn a spare server into a steam content mirror sometime.

Ragnor,

Thanks heaps for the reply.

Will definitely consider switching ISPs if Xnet doesn't get a steam content server soon.

Cheers,
