Hi there,

I'm having a few issues (slowdowns and timeouts) when accessing google related sites, I.e. google.com, gmail, analytics and the google ad servers which in turn slows down any sites that use analytics or google ads.

Here's some info:
  • Tested on multiple computers Windows XP, Windows 7 and OSX and tested on I.E8/9, Firefox, Safari and Chrome so don't think it's an OS or Browser issue.
  • DNS Servers are set to 203.97.788.43 and 20.97.78.44
  • Started at 5.30am on Friday 23rd September (Nothing has changed on PCs/network prior to this)
     - Ping pre 23/09 = 25msec avg (google.com)
     - Ping Post 23/09 = 452msec avg (google.com)
     - http get pre 23/09 = 480msec avg (google.com)
     - http get post 23/09 = 2,236 msec avg (google.com)
  • Have done the usual tests
     - restart router
     - change router
     - test connected directly to port on router
I have read through the forums and found a post that is describing similar issues and the timeline fits with my issue. See http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=50&topicid=90613&page_no=1

I have raised a ticket with Telstraclear, and they reluctantly said that it "may" be an issue with their caching and they would look into it.

So any ideas and is anybody else experiencing this?

Cheers

I had the same problems at home last night (on TC) and was starting to wonder if it was PC related. Seemed a bit hit and miss, and sometimes a good old [F5] would do the trick but other times not.

Glad to hear it's not me :-)

YESSSSSSSSS MY GOODNESS I thought I was the only one. I can't ever access youtube, maybe once in a blue moon it will work properly, and google never works properly. To be honest I've just joined Telstra from Telecom, and after hearing good things all I have had it non stop timing out internet, and an incredibly slow and un responsive t-box. Wish I had never switched over right now

Hi there,

I'm still have slow down issues on Google related sites. I've been able to replicate this issue on 2 different connections both have the same type of modem (Netgear DG834G) so maybe modem related?

Here's a traceroute, any comments?

ya, where is that going?

www.google.co.nz....

22.  74.125.237.18                                                                                                                                    0%   13   13   448  446  449    459

Don't Google have a cache farm in .nz?  Why is all the traffic heading off to the other side of the world for Telstra customers?

From a Wellington based machine...

www.google.co.nz
10. 74.125.237.49                     0.0%    12   38.8  38.9  38.1  40.1   0.5

www.google.com
10. 74.125.237.48                     0.0%    10   38.7  38.6  38.1  39.0   0.3

It's no wonder you're seeing a slow down...  traffic's coming from a long way away.
