Hi there

anyone a cable / networking guru? I was watching my cable connection (I have 2 nic's in my server, and am using Etheral on the cable-connected NIC), and I'm getting a continious flow of about 5K/s of just ARP traffic. All "who has (ip)" type stuff.

Anyone know if this is normal for Cable? I'm kinda assuming we dont get charged for it, 'cos 5K/s all the time rather adds up :(

thought?

Ta

Nic

Thanks.

5K/s seems rather high. Oh, well....

ta for the info. Now, if I can work out when i get upgraded from 2m/2m to 4m/2m (no letters sent :( ) I'll be happy. Billing rollover was..... um, 3 days ago....

I used to see the same thing when I was on cable. As TCL goes it is normal. Well normal for Cable around these parts anyway.  Can be quite interesting to see what type of network cards people are using tho based on their mac address. :)

They don't charge for the Arp traffic thankfully though.

if its only ARP data it's normal network 'noise'
for the first year TCL cable was available in christchurch it wasn't just ARP data you would get for free ;)

Yeah, for a while you used to be able to create a direct route (not via their gateway) and do free data between two cablemodem users aswell, but that got fixed some time back I believe.

All data between cable modem machines used to be free.

The old Paradise usage meter was way superior to the new TCL one, being able to see IP's and traffic charges in real time was years ahead of what they have now.

There was even a DC filesharing hub only for paradise customers.

The free data between customers was a huuuuge incentive for people to keep data within the network (bonus for TCL: no network egress charges) what were they thinking when they stopped doing that!!

Yep... How many nights I spent playing DII:LoD or AoE II with friends, all of us on TelstraClear network. It was great, fast (still is) and free!

Yes, the streaming radio stations were also quite innovative. Unfortuneatly only 2 of them are still running. Radioactive which is local anyway, and one other. The rest are all offline.

They also used to have quite a few game servers, which have more or less become nonexistant. :(

that was one thing that surprised me - TCL charing for all cable data, not just that which leaves the network. I guess it IS easier to explain :)

It would be nice to setup some TCL only services, and run them on the end of the cable box (which I do anyway at the moment). Would possible bring more people TO cable, for the extra, cool, community stuff :)

Anyway.... I mostly wanted it to push TV shows to and from a friend up the road....
