I've tried searching through Google for a cause for the internet outage we experienced throughout Sunday afternoon in the above mentioned date.  I called TC and all I got was an automated message saying that there is an unplanned outage in the affected area.

I'm just curious as to what has happened and whether or not it was TC's fault.  I couldn't find anywhere even the slightest mention of this, surely I'm not the only one who got affected.

Are you saying you know better than a company with a $705 million dollar turn over? ;)

Ok, seriously...  if they're not even going to bother publishing the faults any more I really doubt we'll hear the reasons why they happened.

If it was a localised event it could be something power related. For example power goes down due to heavy rain, a specific node is affected, others are not. If the service is restored in a few minutes I wouldn't call outage.

Could you clarify how long was the outage and the correct date (seeing 17th October WAS NOT a Sunday)?

Large company syndrome, customer services are not allowed to update their web page status without clearance from marketing, legal etc etc etc etc.

Yes, I've noticed uneven connectivity right now, and the Network Status section tends to be a bit out of date. Tried resetting the modem, and I can safely conclude it's a wider network issue.

One of TCL's upstream providers has issues so some international traffic seems to be affected (I haven't noticed any issues myself). Totally unrelated to any outages on Sunday.

Even a number of well-known local sites are affected too.

Are these outages frequent?
Considering switching to Telstra Clear, but not is the service is unreliable.

For me it only started happening earlier tonight. I'm getting decent access to some sites but not others. Other than that they're usually quite robust. The few times they do actually have downtime, it's harsh downtime.

I'm on TelstraClear cable and was using 203.96.152.4 and 203.96.152.12 as DNS.

Arrived home tonight to some web pages not responding.  More importantly my Asterisk PBX was not registering to its SIP trunk groups (notably pan.wxnz.net which is my main Wellington number) which also prevented my extensions from registering because of timeout/retry on the SIP trunk groups.

Was going to give Google DNS a try, but read here I shouldn't because of local NZ caches, so have switched to Telecom/Xtra DNS for now which is working fine on 202.27.158.40 and 202.27.156.72.

Using Xtra's DNS servers is (almost) as bad as using Google's DNS. There is no good reason why you shouldn't be using TelstaClear's DNS servers, and ideally should migrated off the old Paradise DNS servers a long time ago as they have been problematic for years.

As for Asterisk, this is getting totally OT but their are well documented Asterisk DNS issues which are very easy to solve. For a start you should ideally never use a FQDN as a SIP peer unless you're running a local DNS resolver.
