Id' like to thank the tech support staff at XNet.

While getting a sky box installed the contractor had cut the phone line to put a phone jack to a new location.

With the router on this caused a short which for some reason altered the PVC setting to disabled (why I have no idea).

I didn't realise the Sky contractor had cut the phone line to add an extension so I called XNet and they patiently went thru diagnostics and then had a Telecom (Chorus) guy check the line.

The most amazing thing was a Chorus tech rang to ask how it was going, this was a first, so maybe things are improving because of the split.

After trying an old router (ADSL) I could get internet access but the speed was slow eg 2Mbs compared to (11Mbps) on AG310(ADSL 2+).

I tested the line voltage and it was 4-5v so I suspected something was up as it should be >45v.

After crawling under the house and seeing the Sky Contractors efforts I cut out their efforts and rejoined the wires.

Heh presto full speed and everything working fine.

Moral of the story - Only cut one wire at a time, don't trust every crimp to be good. Use a voltmeter.

So I owe a few more beers to the XNet Techs, these guys are very good.

PS on a side note I've been recommending XNet to alot of friends and family. One sticking point is transferring email providers. I know of portable numbers, how about portable email addresses? Once you've got a couple of thousand business cards printed it's very hard to change ISP's.

Yea Xnet's tech people are generally pretty good. Their accounts department/"sales Team". man don't get me started on those jokers. If they could sort that out Xnet would be near the top of the list assuming their new plans are competitive in my books.

 One sticking point is transferring email providers. I know of portable numbers, how about portable email addresses? Once you've got a couple of thousand business cards printed it's very hard to change ISP's.


There is such a thing (kind of) as portable email addresses.  Buy a domain name then it's portable between ISP's.  They are cheap and not too hard to set-up.  It still amazes me how some companies (even big ones) still use xtra email addresses!



P.S.  Always had such good service from Xnet I've never needed to call them!

For me personally I'm glad I chose a international email company, so choosing an ISP was only price and service.

Unfortunately for many this is not the case.

Time will tell.

Thanks for the comments Woolly, always nice to hear positives as well, the guys in Tech support and Customer Care actually really care about our custys and are generally pretty good at what they do, it's actually a job I would struggle with as I don't have the patience, so I have a lot of respect for the work they do.

Are you aware you can have a domain and email to @yourdomain for as little as ~$10 per year I'm quite quite sure why so many people rely on ISP email. This looks far more professional than an ISP email address.

If you want what is probably the cheapest option sign up for a domain with godaddy.com and use the free email service they offer.

Sign up your domain then get a Google apps account (free). Then you have the power of gmail as your provider. Works well
