Have been playing with auto config generators for .htaccess and can get the file reconised just unable to get the file to refrence the .htpasswd file. is there somthing about the homepage servers im missing in regards to refrencing a /username/.htpasswd file. any feed back from someone who has doe it before would be great.

You'll need to start again and tell us what you're trying to do, and what's going wrong, before you can get any help. Your post makes little sense.

Im trying to use the ISP supplyed homepages server (ISP is TelstraClear) in this case.
i have made a basic .htaccess and .htpasswd files that there web server reads and then askes the end user for user/pass etc.
trying to have some form of authentication is where im going here.

and whats going wrong is once i get promped to enter said credintals it does not allow me past and keeps asking for user/pass

Unlikely isp provided hosting will allow you the option to setup custom .htaccess files for password protection. If they did, you would need to know the full server path to your directory. Some hosts now have control panels that allow you to automatically set that up in the control panel. Otherwise you would need to get support from your host.
