"We understand your position but on balance, we do not consider that consumers would be misled by our billboard. However, rather than risk that a few people may conclude that TelstraClear’s overall broadband is always the fastest in all cases and at all times we will replace these billboards as soon as we can, which will be slightly earlier than planned." - http://www.truenet.co.nz/articles/telstraclear-billboard-correction

What really annoyed me the most is that if Telstra just turned on the Docsis 3 network then the statement could be almost true!

But it's not true at all is it.

What's more, the response from Telstra reads to me more like a fob off and "pffft... we paid for that sign and we'll pull it down a couple of days early if it'll just shut you up."

I disagree. You are one of the strongest vocal supporters of TrueNet and should know how it works.

TelstraClear commissioned a report based on data collected by TrueNet. The data points out that consumers experience better speeds on a certain ISP.

So they rightfully use that to claim the speed. They have evidence. It's not like they are talking out of their ears.

Nothing to see here.

TCL are well within their rights to use that claim.

I would just like to point out my post from the other Truenet thread which now appears somewhat prescient

I don't agree with some of the arguments some of you have presented already.

I am currently wondering if some of you even read the linked article on the TrueNet web site.

However, I am happy to agree to disagree. :)

Mine, is just one view here, and I think that public forums are important to get a cross section of views.

Personally I regarded the wording "...Christchurch's fastest ISP..." as mis-leading when you consider that Telstra is only the fastest on their cable network and only 50% of Christchurch is covered by the cable network.

I also questioned the term "officially the fastest" (which stands out), with the very light grey disclaimer under it as a qualifier.

I questioned this following a month of debate about straight line data testing that one GZ user has been doing (2mbit v's 10mbit to .us servers) and the on going problem with slow google response times (traces to google taking ~450ms).

What is not apparent from the photo I linked above is that I could not read the grey wording on the sigh while driving past it at traffic speed.  The image has been enhanced so you can read it, but in perspective the disclaimer is not visible in my view.

However, I would invite other Christchurch based people to take a drive past the sign this week before it comes down and make up their own minds.

I am very very happy to concede that this is simply my view and I do apologies, I should have included a question mark in the title and if a mod can edit it, please do.

McDonalds have "NZ's Favourite Fries" on the side of their chip packets, with a nice disclaimer "*Based on number of sales" (or something to that effect).

It's all marketing speak, and claims that are based on statistics, not on what every single person may believe. I think McDonalds chips are the worst, but you just know its marketing speak. I for one won't be losing any sleep over it.

At a glance I consider OP's claims to be valid that the billboard is misleading. Had it not been for the closeup photo attached to OP I would guess that most people simply see "Officially the Fastest" along with the TCL branding on that billboard as they drive past.

Instead of "officially" would you like to see "statistically"?

If the text following "Officially the Fastest" was in the same font/size/emphasis, I would have no problems with the wording.

No.  I think ahmad seems to get the point I'm making, agrees with me and makes my point better than I did.

The facts that I have seen indication that in half of Christchurch Telstra is the fastest for web pages, in the other half it is only 7th for web pages.

In the entire of Christchurch Xnet is 5 times faster for straight line single thread pulling from a range of overseas servers according to tests done by another Geekzone user.

At 25mbit's, even the HFC network is not as fast as the VDSL2 network will go either, and that product is now in the market.

I do actually agree with some of the finer points that some people here pointed out.

However that's the point of 'misleading'.  It's not 'wrong', it's just 'misleading' in my view.

Providers such as Xnet do deliver a faster service as has been claimed by GZ users.

Telecom provides a faster DSL service and does service almost 100% of Christchurch, so again, mis-leading in my view.

However, again, I will very much accept that others don't agree and I am only 1 vote, which is why I put it out there for discussion.

MF, thanks for changing the title.  I think that is a little more appropriate.
