A statement from Steve Jackson, Head of Consumer: Our free broadband weekend saw our customers flocking to experience all the internet has to offer. This was an innovative initiative to explore new ways of offering our customers the best service that we can.

While we understand the frustrations of a few who found others’ use of broadband restrictive from their own perspective, the initiative highlights the importance the vast majority of Kiwis place on their ability to access the internet, and offers some interesting dynamics for a future UFB world.

Early indications are that intermittent and reduced speeds were experienced by some customers when accessing international sites which are not cached in New Zealand. However, TelstraClear’s network in New Zealand performed to its usual high standard and we have no plans to provide compensation. Overall results - which are yet to be thoroughly analysed – will provide important feedback, both for TelstraClear and the industry as a whole,”

Interesting that they saw no issue with their own network given that the Speedtest results presumably aren't affected by international bandwidth?

(it seems to me that perhaps some nodes are too oversubscribed?)

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I dropped the Television service if this attitude and actions of Telstra continue I will review the rest of my business with them.

Cause some reporter on stuff mentioned punters may be demanding it cause their gaming was slow etc.

"There is no word yet on compensation if any"

Sure.. makes sense to pay back subscribers for something they weren't getting charged for for 2 days.. right? :P

+1. Good post.

I survived the weekend averaging 1Mbps on the TCL Speedtest and I wasn't considering any action. I'm actually keen to see deeper analysis that shows what actually happened. But if TCL continue with this sort of piffle then I will seriously consider moving ISP.

Droll? Not sure if you're blowing a raspberry or being cheeky.

The only charges avoided were for overage which most of us avoid at any time.

I was being cheeky. Didn't quite think of it like that, then again as you say the primary target audience would likely never get close to cap anyway. Really would make it a high user/leechers stress test wouldn't it.

I jokingly said to a mate 'wait for news report this week of the most C&D notices being handed out by the US recording industry yet'. Would be funny if it comes to fruition. All those teenagers waiting the perfect opportunity to pirate to their hearts content ignoring the legislation 'cause they can and it won't blow my cap'

And who makes gets paid for those notices!? I think that might be TelstraClear! lol

They could make more money out of infringement notices this weekend than they would charging data!

Which one would you go to though?  Seems to me that they all do this from time to time.

This is one reason that UFB is going to be good.   Everyone will be able to get up to 4 providers and just flick them on and off when they want.

In the short term people need to just look for alternative layer 1 providers in their area.

I'm all for community based delivery where you get a bunch of providers into one space and them share them out locally on your own private network.

I think compensation isn't necessary, if people got given compensation for slow speeds due to congestion, which was caused by the limitation of the network, not being able to provide those speeds to everyone, what stops people from claiming compensation for adsl connections where one user gets 18mbps because he's closer compared to someone paying the same amount who is further away on a 5mbps connection. Its not feasible to do this which is why its on a best effort basis, and speeds are  not guaranteed all day everyday.

I mean if i get diverted off the motorway late at night because of roadworks and have to drive 10km further than if the motorway was still open, i wouldn't expect compensation for extra costs to me, but i would like to.

I agree, compensation is not necessary. But admitting that their network, certainly in some areas, just was not up to coping with a demand like this over such a short period of time would be nice, and publicly recognising these areas with a promise to work quickly at alleviating these problems I think is what is required.

What this weekend has done is highlight the areas that were probably already is straining at the seams and they should accept no new connections in these areas until they increase the network capability.

Thing is, you're not on a road are you?

If you were to turn up at the airport on Friday, booked to fly to LA and they told you that your flight was delayed until Monday what would you say then?

If they'd actually know a month ago that they were planning on not having that flight available for you then what would you have said?

Yeah its not a good analogy, its hard to think of a decent one, living in Auckland all i think about is motorways and roads.

What you should do is not use analogies and just focus on the issue with it's dynamics rather than trying to compare it.

You wouldn't try to compare water and petrol yet they will both come out of the ground if you know where to look.

I also agree that if you're not happy then you should as for compo.

In the past I have asked for 25cents compo and got it.  It sends a message that you're not happy and leaves a paper trail that makes the point.

People have to just make up their minds with this stuff and if they're not happy then move or do something productive about it.

You really think that is how it will work?
I very much doubt it, for a start most providers will probably lock you in for at least 12 months.
Each provider will still have to provide the end user with a router of some sort to connect to the ONT so there could be a delay in getting this swapped out.
I don't know if the providers will allow the end user to supply their own router or not.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.
