On VFNZ's website they mention that if you are travelling a lot you can talk to them about a Global Data roaming solution.

Does anyone know any details about this?

I know all about $10/MB on Vodafone partner networks, $30/MB on just about everything else, but was hoping that there might be something better than this?

Normally I'd just ask one of our account managers, but can't get hold of them at the moment.

I don't think it's different than this. Actually "partners network" means a Vodafone branded network.

While in the USA I tend to find local hotspots. In the Silicon Valley is easyto find free ones in most cafes. Elsewhere, McDonald's have some good prices at $1.50/hour, and T-Mobile is in every Starbucks or Borders bookstore.

Using the WiFi hotspots sounds like a good option.

I had hoped to use my Novatel U740 card (mainly to see what EDGE was like), but $30/MB seems a bit much when WiFi hotspots are reasonably prevalent!

I jsut came back from a week long trip (!) to the UK via Sydney, and Hong Kong. I made sure my phone was set to Vodafone AUS, Vodafone/Smartone in HK and Vodafone in the UK (though in the UK for some reason it kept on changing to another network many times). I used the GPRS data services for mail with a Sony Clie and SnapperMail via BT to the phone and kept the data rates low by only downloading mail headers from my POP mail account. It all worked fine and reliably and hopefully I only transferred about 3MB of data which I hope is no more than about $30-$40 since I made sure I stayed on partner networks all the time

If you're in a country with multiple networks and want to stay on 1 particular network it pays to set your phone to manual network selection and manually select the network you want. Even though you can set the priority of networks in a list I've found that eveyr phone I'd had still swaps between networks at times.

I was doing that. Each time I landed I did a manual network selection. But that still didn't stop the phone from selecting another network, possibly when the preferred carrier signal was weak? I just checked each time I was about to send a text or do e-mail and switch back if necessary

Even though you did a manual search did you make sure your search mode was set to manual and not automatic? If sounds like that even though you've done a manual search that the search mode may have been set to automatic which allows the phone to change networks by itself.

Could be right. I just checked the phone (SE K750i). The search mode was automatic and I have now reset it to manual. Of course since I am now back in NZ I won't be able to check for a while :-) Thanks
