I have recently noticed some issues with my broadband at home.

I enjoy nice download speeds, not that I download much at all, just makes for a nice browsing experience. However, i also play a lot of online games (COD MW2 + 3) and noticed a bit of lag.

I wondered why i was never host, since i managed to get onto so pretty shocking hosts.

So i checked out my internet connection. Speedtest.net reports:

Auckland - Down = ~6Mbps, Up = ~0.1Mbps
Sydney - Down = ~5Mbps, Up = ~0.1Mbps

I checked out the stats on the modem:

From I can understand, the above "noise" on the lines are good.

I have tried the usual, remove all filters and other devices, but i always seem to get the same slow upload speed.

Any ideas?

When did you last change plans? I'd pick you've never changed plans for a long time and are still on one of the old ones with 128kbps upstream.

I'm inclined to agree, It appears the upload speed is being artificially limited to 128kbps but it also appears that your download sync speed is being artificially limited to 7.6mbps.

From what I can see the line conditions shown in the picture appear to be as close to perfect anyone could hope be achieved with ADSL2+ for the Download at least. (To be honest I have no idea on why upload speeds fluctuate as much as they do)

The mode of g.dmt indicates an ADSL1 modem in use doesn't it? Although the upstream of 920k is too fast for ADSL1. Odd.

bisplus is ADSL2+ if I remember correctly.

When i first signed up with Telstra Clear at my old place i was on a limited plan, but that was changed shortly afterwards, then when I moved house i just transferred the account.

According to TelstraClear's website, all their plans have maximum speed now? #EDIT# I am on the $79 plan, which according to the website is maximum speed (previously I was on the one that was limited to 128kbps up and 256kbps down)

I suppose it is possible that they may have dropped the speed back down, i will call them to confirm when i get home.

The modem has ADSL2+ written on it (Vodafone branded Modem) but that doesnt always mean that it is correct. If I was looking for a different modem, is there a type that people have had the most success with?

Yes, but... A little bird told me that some old plans were not automatically update for one reason or another. So if you have a problem like this it pays to call and confirm.

I will give them a call tonight, probably should have done that in the first place, but it was late at night and i was feeling lazy

Hi, your line stats are actually showing some poor issues. firstly your getting 920kb/s up, so any upload limit like 100kb/s is happening elsewhere not with the DSL part of the connection.

What is very disturbing is 7.6Mb/s down yet 1.4dB attenuation and a handsome 33dB noise margin, this clearly says to me there is wiring or other issues thats damaging a large number of bins, you should be getting over twice that download.

Thanks for your input, just so I can get my head around all of this, you are saying that the modem stats are all good? or is there a figure that i should be monitoring with my testing?

At the moment the ADSL modem is located at the end of the house furtherest from the road (and i guess the d-mark). I will try move the modem to the closest phone jack and test there.

I have the luxury of loads of space under the house, so re-running cables is not a problem. I was thinking to save line length, install the modem in the room closest to the road, and run cat5 back down to the office and firewall (Oh and i have tested the modem without the firewall in place).

Hi, your line stats are both good and bad, there is lots of potential but I suspect your house wiring is spoiling the show.

The length of cable is not the issue, DSL is good for a couple of kms with near full speed, so a few extra meters at your house wont matter. what is important is the way its wired.

To get the most out of you setup, install a central/master filter at the demarc, and run a new cat5e run from the DSL port of the filter to a dedicated DSL socket for the modem, connect the existing house voice wiring to the voice side of the filter, that way all the open line stubs of the house wiring will no longer effect your DSL performance.

In terms of a master filter, I see you have posted in other threads that the MM3200B filter is best. Any idea where i can get my hands on one?

Just on the phone with Telstra Clear now and you were spot on, I was on a PDQ Turbo which is an older/slower plan.

Never realised that they had changed their plans, and that I would have to request a change! but live and learn!

With the huge help from cyril7 i have now installed a master ADSL2/VDSL2 splitter under my house.

Hi, two things I have noted in your current modem stats, firstly its a Vodafone Echolife modem, and two its still stuck on 7.6Mb/s. This seems to be a well known issue and had I known the modem was the model it is I would have mentioned it.

There is a firmware upgrade on the Voda site, put that in and you should see a significant speed increase.
