Hi there GZ,

I have been in the process of moving north and have not checked up on things for a while, but I have a pressing matter which brings me back to the collective knowledge of everyone here...

I have terrible signal at my new place, and my new employer is quite adamant that I have signal as I will be on call in the near future. I am looking at two options - call diversion (cost effective) and femtocell - the Vodafone cell-signal-over-broadband solution.

The issue is that I cannot afford (currently) the cost of the unit ($350ish) and the cost of switching to Vodafone broadband ($150ish) which may not even be the best choice in my area anyway.

Has anyone got any ideas? I have set up a Yagi antenna on the roof (enclosed triangular one) and a passive cradle on the end of the coax, but I still get no signal. I do get signal, however, with the antenna plugged into the external antenna port of my galaxy S - this is not what I want to settle for as it is under the battery cover.

Please, hit me with your best suggestions!!!

Would be handy to know where you are moving up North?

New coverage might be on the way depending where you will be living under the RBI build

My parents are in the same situation in Whanganui, and whilst I agree it's great that Vodafone at least offer some sort of solution, those are huge dollars to make up for a network that doesn't provide as good a coverage as Telecom does to that same location.

If your Boss wants you to be on Call then he should pay to make sure you can be. Either front up for the cost of the Sure Signal and Vodafone connection or if they is coverage on another network get him to supply a phone and pay for the connection/rentals

thats my 2 cents worth anyway

Or pay for the diverted calls from mobile to landline

Diverting to landline is probably the easiest short term solution

I had bad coverage in Khandallah on any network so when I did on call just diverted the on call phone to my landline

Whoa thanks for the quick replies people,

I saw the diversion cost (my work cell is on a business plan) is less than $4 per month - I will call Vodafone during business hours and see what the deal is on the costs per incoming call, if it is anything, to divert to my homeline.

johnr - we have moved up to Whangarei, our place is out towards Ngunguru, not too far out of town, it's very surprising we don't have coverage here, but no networks seem to work.

Our closest cell tower is in Tikipunga.

jaxson - I do agree, it is an expensive solution, but at least Vodafone isn't the only network that doesn't work our here - none do!
We can receive the odd text but that is not network specific, and forget about sending texts or making/receiving calls...

and, ferg_nz, I agree it's a bit harsh to have to pay, it is written into the contract that I need to have cellphone reception at my house but we had moved in well before I saw that.

Again, thanks for the ideas...

Same as you calling the landline from your mobile
