For anyone who wants to post pictures info etc of the RBI towers etc.

Here's the new tower for Puketaha, Waikato. Speed test on Nokia N8 was around 6mbps, but a DC or other device should be able to pull a bit more. Coverage dropped off fairly quickly due to still being in testing / optimisation phase.

It's a design marvel. Glad they used some awesome designers on that, so it wouldn't be just another ugly pylon on the landscape - not. Guess at least it is near all the other ugly pylons, so it has friends.

Interesting, the only one that I've seen designed like that before was in Geraldine.

Ah, ok. They must not be very popular. Is there any particular reason that ones like this are chosen?

This is the way all microwave towers were in the good old days. Smile
There are a number of advantages.

- Less twisting of the microwave beam under wind loading, compared with narrow/lightweight designs.
- Supports heavy antenna systems, mainly a benefit when supporting large microwave dishes.
- Easy to have an internal stair/ladder system for climbing.
- Riggers can work from *behind* the antenna beam, so less need to power down the transmitters.
- Large spacing possible between antennas reduces interference between different systems.
- Plenty of room to add antennas - if a second or third operator comes along, no problem.

Probably other reasons, it's been a long time I worked in that area... and I'm guessing that tower in Rotorua (and others) has probably been there since the 1980's.

Am I right in assuming XT gear will be loaded onto that tower also and at some stage 2degrees?

If it is in fact RBI then my understanding is that it is required to allow co-location on the tower.
