I've got a modem with a Vodafone SIM in it that I use to send a small quantity of SMSes to customers.

I'm tossing up whether to leave it on prepay and just keep checking it's got enough credit, or to put it on our business account.

What's better from a cost/convenience point of view? It does no calling, just SMS.

Leave on prepay but get it attached to your My Vodafone login.
Then you can topup online etc.
