I've recently bought a mobile device that ISN'T capable of 3G, but claims to support "GPRS/EDGE" and I don't exactly understand how that works.

In short, I'm really only interested in how to configure the settings so that I can go online outside of Wi-fi, and the information it asks for is the following:

Network-
 Access:
 Account:
 Password:
 Proxy:
 Port:

MMS-
 Access:
 Account:
 Password:
 MMS Proxy:
 Port:
 MMSC:

So my main question is, how do I fill that in in order for me to have GPRS/EDGE access? To my understanding, EDGE is a faster version of GPRS? If that the case I would like to configure for EDGE.

I've been browsing vodafone.co.nz this whole morning for more information, such as the cost of GPRS/EDGE, but found nothing. Another question I have is, for EDGE, do I have to do anything on Vodafone's side such as buying a plan? Or do I simply set it up on my phone and then just pay for whatever I use? Or is it possible to buy those 250mb/month plans, does GPRS/EDGE apply to those plans too?

Thanks in advance,
Jun

Hi Jun

Have you checked out the sticky posts in this part of geekzone?

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40

You have not mentioned if you are a postpay or Prepay customer!

We also have this section on the Vodafone NZ forum

Vodafone NZ do not have EDGE enabled only GPRS

All settings are the same for packet switch data if the handset is attached to GPRS or 3G

Thankyou so much, I have read the relevant posts in the sticky section and my phone is now configured to be able to go online via GPRS Laughing

Lastly, just to confirm:

johnr:

Does this mean that plans I buy such as "Smart $45" will work with GPRS and supply data to my phone? Sorry my head is yet to get around all of these jargony terms haha, but I'm learning!

Thanks again

FYI before you can receive a MMS (PXT) you need to send one first
