Hi, I'm considering switching to Vodafone but was wondering if some of you could tell me your average download/upload speed. I'm currently getting 9mb download and 0.94mb upload with Telstraclear, don't really want anything much slower than that. I'm using ADSL not cable.

Thanks.

Speed will depend entirely on your ADSL sync rates and what you're really meaning when you ask for "download/upload speed".

If you're simply wanting people to post their speeds to a local speedtest.net server, asking the question of without also asking for ADSL sync rates isn't gong to tell you anything. speedtest.net results can't exceed ADSL syhc rates, and if your sample was from 10 rural people who have poor internal home wiring and no master filter then you'll probably end up with results that differ significantly from 10 people who live in an urban environment and have a master filter.

I'd take a stab now and say your ADSL is syncing at around 11Mbps if you're seeing speed test results of 9Mbps. You won't be able to change to any other ISP and see results that are better than this.

If you were to post your DSL sync stats, location in relation to your nearest cabinet/exchange (which you can see from the Chorus site)and a brief rundown of home wiring we could probably tell you if upgrading your home wiring will improve your speeds.

I get 3.1 down and 0.70 up using a Vodafone ADSL modem.

The modem diagnostics seem to disagree with Speedtest though as they say I am getting 7616.

We recently had ADSL2 upgrade but my modem is still connecting on G.DMT which I think is the slower method. I do not know how to access the advanced settings to make any change to that though.

Also there are different standards, ADSL, ADSL 2+, VDSL etc, so your location can determine availability of each and also having a modem that's capable of the desired standard is important as well.

For what it's worth I'm on Vodafone's Ultimate pack and it works really well. I haven't done a speed test in a long time but could have a go. I'm wireless from modem to laptop, so never really know if I'm seeing the line speed or the local wireless bit. In real use terms it's fast as and I don't have any complaints about the service, both ADSL and from the company Vodafone themselves.

I'm on Vodafone red network and get about 15Meg down which is nice... just over 1 up which I'd like to increase.

Rural, ~4mb/s down and 0.76 up, it's like that 24/7, very happy with it.

Thanks for your answers, vodafone sound pretty good so far, just gotta talk to telstra about those early termination charges, heard vodafone offered to pay up to $100 but dunno if they're still doing that.

Wellington CBD, connect rate of 17Mbps, download speed of around 1.7MB/sec.

Very marginally faster than a Telecom connection that is about 1Km further afield (16Mbps, 1.5MB/sec). They're both using the same systems so it's mostly dependant on distance from the exchange and quality of the wire between the road and your ADSL modem.

Both were tested on Saturday by myself.

I don't recall what the upload rates are as they're both capped at the same relatively slow speed so it's pretty irrelevant.

At the end of the day for me swapping was about price and service - I wasnt going to quibble about a mbps here or there. It really means nothing with o/s downloads anyway.

Im happy I changed from telecom + telstra to Vodafone as it gets all the eggs in one basket.
So far the few service calls I have made have been actioned quickly and promptly (which I cant say about telstra)

We changed because essentially there are only 2 choices out here really - VF or Telecom.

With VF we were able to combine our Sky sub, get upgraded to My Sky free and save at least $80 a month, so it was a no brainer.

Speed is still less than half what I would like to have but no realistic chance of that ever changing unless we bin copper altogether or mobile becomes so fast and so cheap it is worth swapping to that.

Have found VF's support to be very good, I must say.

We also no longer use our land line for outgoing calls except locally and overseas. I have so many pre-paid minutes on my VF iPhone plan (240) that I just use them instead.

Does anyone know why there would be a difference between what the modem says the connection speed is and what Speedtest says it is?

My VF modem says that it is connected at 7616 kbps, which I think I am right in saying is 7.6mbps?

However, Speedtest returns between 1.8mbps and 3.1mbps depending on time of day with marginal variations caused by server choice.

Ping is around 72 all the time.

I was just wondering why there is such a discrepancy?

Back haul / transmission to the cabinet / exchange so the modem can achieve close to that speed but bottle neck is somewhere else
