Hi guys not asking for any help or anything. Just was at JB-HIFI in Westgate today, and I was playing around on their macs on display there, and after google directed me to google.com.au, I decided to do an IP address test and it was Telstraclear. But the IP Address location claimed to be in Sydney. How is that the case, are all Telstra IP address claim to be location in Sydney or what?

Just find it wierd

IP geolocation is not a science, but an art. The IP addresses are allocated to different companies and there's a registry of where those IP are registered to. But those IP addresses are moved between companies, updated, etc.

IP geolocation is mostly based on files supplied by third party and sometimes those are only updated every few months. There's no way to say for sure where one IP is hosted at, except for the ISPs themselves.

It may also route out through their corporate VPN to Australia.

Yep... We have lot of Geekzone users posting from France, Canada, Singapore and Australia, Finland IP addresses - actually all of these coming from their corporate networks...

Haha its funny how the corporate IT policy makes things far slower and more expensive for businesses. Finland- that's like almost a 1 second RTT as the data would go:

NZ -> Finland -> NZ -> Finland ->NZ

And international bandwidth isn't cheap!

Their IP addresses are provided by Telstra, not TelstraClear, and are Australian as the company is Australian.

I was working with a number of larger companies in NZ who have AUS parent companies. They seemed to be routed via MessageLabs which made for even more fun as that is a transparent proxy too with at least 3 or 4 different geolocation end-points. Which made for fun as we were doing authentication based on cookie & source IP address. Not good when half way through their browser session their IP address all of a sudden changed from Sydney to Perth, and back again.

Nothing would suprise me about retail stores especially if they have an AUS parent. It would seem completely normal to run all customer facing browsing via a proxy filtering internet traffic.

Facebook can give warnings/challenges when your location changes dramatically quickly.
