Does TelstraClear have any plan options that allow unmetered internet traffic to other TS subscribers?

I have a number of friends and family that I would encourage to switch to TS if I could set up a VPN between us and have any traffic NOT be charged to BOTH parties (upload+download).

From a marketing perspective, this would have similar advantages to Vodafone's "Best Mate's" phone feature, encouraging associates onto the same network.

And from a business productivity point of view, I believe it would ACTUALLY increase productivity and innovation (unlike the silly claims that UFB/TV-pipe will! :p)

Besides considering a Broadband unlimited plan, I seem to recall one ISP that offered a "Pay an additional $20 for unlimited national traffic".

Nope. Some of their DSL customers might be on telecom wholesale, so they can't do this.

hopefully thinking. telstrasaturn used to have 1/10th billing for national traffic. but they ditched it.

Sounds like you are implying Cable Connections here?
As a Cable usere im all for this as the added cost to Telstra would in theroy be minimal as its still on there own network.

For cable they could do it but they won't.

It would increase congestion or at least consumed bandwidth within their domestic network for little gain in revenue.

Taking the commercial realities into account, and providing something new in the market, I'd propose something like this:

$5-$10 extra per month for each nominated TS "BestMate".
An additional allocation of 2 x your international monthly allowance is free between you and your BestMate, during hours 7am-12pm (e.g. If you're on a 40GB plan, you get 80GB of traffic to/from your BestMate)
Unmetered (free) traffic between BestMates during the hours of 12am-7am. (Useful for mutual offsite backups)

= Additional revenue + minimal increase in congestion + little cost to TS + great new marketing angle.

Now's (that's) Good! :)

Of course, that would only work on the cable network and/or DSL if you're on telstra's DSLAMS with their own backhaul..

If you contact Unleash they will definitely be able to do something like this for you with a mix between ADSL, VDSL2 and anything at all really. Can build whatever plan you want with them....

Slingshot offer un-metered internet, wouldn't call it "unlimited", how about those peak time speeds... lots of data at slow rates appeals to a different market than Telstraclear who have always aimed to be a higher end option.

i dunno if telstraclear even did adsl at that point in time. i'm thinking around 10 years ago..

Yeah I was thinking the same, we also have quite literally hundreds of DSL connections as part of various WAN solutions.

It can be done, however whether residential users are willing to pay the slightly extra costs is another question. Easier to get your friends and family on an ISP which does unlimited plans, unless of course you have a specific need to have full inter-site connectivity.

It was never listed on the plans, but they used to. I used to stream music from home to work continuously and never got billed for the traffic.

I guessed the router which did the metering was further out in the network from where the cable subscriber=>cable subscriber routing was done. This meant that two cable subscribers would get free traffic.

I don't know if the loophole still exists, or how you would test it now that they don't tell you the IP addresses you're being billed for.

Netsolutionz here in the top of the south offer that service on there dsl and fibre network. All local traffic is free on there network, we sign up all our clients to them as they also hold our data centre, free traffic on backup's (some clients are pushing 20gb a night) and virtual clients/servers etc is rather handy!

Guys,
you're talking about some significant complexity within a BRAS/BNG platform to selectively generate billing records for some traffic and not for others. Think of it like cisco access list example.
You have 5 network ranges ( say customer ranges A,B, C, D & E). You have the Internet ( everything else thats not one of your local customer ranges, X).
5x5+1 = 26 statements in that access list thtat allows for customer to customer interaction without hitting the bottom rule that says "It's from somewhere else, generate a billing record"

1) If from A to A, exit, no billing
2) if from A to B, exit, no billing
...
24) If from E to D, exit, no billing
25) If from E to E, exit, no billing
26) Bill it, it's from elsewhere/The Internet.

It might not describe the most perfect way of doing things but it can be done if you're a tier 2 or tier 3 ISP, but it becomes nightmareish to do when you get beyond a certain size.
The classifiers within a BRAS to do that sort of thing very quickly get eaten up.

Then you also have to factor on doing that at 1Gbps or 10Gbps linerate as well.
It quickly ceases to be a business/marketing problem and becomes a technical capability nightmare.

The Classifiers that do the work that this needs are rare and are often better used to do things like zero-rating/unmetering traffic to a media content provider like Ziln.

These are also not small boxes, they are upwards of $150K and handle customer connection loadings in to order of 10s of thousands.
