It looks like the smart auto-installer will break under Vista as it appears to be mounted on a 16 bit filing system? The Vodem USB composite device looks like an USB CD Drive but it cannot be read by Vista, well I cant read it. The auto installer, licence prompts and so on fails to launch. Copying the contents of the disk from a non Vista OS machine and launching the  autoinf reference only manages to partly install the drivers and the VMC Lite software, and then only by launching the miscellaneous binaries with fingers crossed. Manually installing libraries, registering controls and importing registries however still isnt enough to coax the vodem into life.

Besides, the modem and comport interfaces dont install automatically on device insertion only the CD device. Essentially unusable, although hardware reset or reboot may trigger device detection but that isnt friendly. The software license indicates alpha software. It works on XP but the vodem looks flawed on Vista. Would love to hear from a succeesful user under Vista RC2. Vista hasnt been kind to the regular VMC application but I have it working reliably with a 3G card using version 4 software and drivers, but it would be nice to have this cooperaating with Vista and the vodem. Thoughts.?? The configuration is an Compaq nx6325 Turionx2/2.0 laptop.

I am not using it on Vista, but on Windows XP. I know from experience the "CDFS" is not readable from Vista. You say you can install the drivers from the .inf files? I haven't tried yet.

You realise the vodem is just another modem after the drivers are installed, and you can manually create a connectoid on Windows XP and don't need the VMC software for that. Is this possible on Windows Vista?

Sorry I am asking but you seem to be trying already. I have Windows Vista RC2 but I have to dual boot, so might try this later, if you don't post here before...

I have tried the Vodem on RC2... There is no way to get it to work. I have tried every hack and workaround suggested on the net for VMC and Vodem.

Vodafone say they have Vista software on the way.

Thanks for the replies,

with a little bit of perseverance I have been able to get the vodem to coexist with Vista. Both VMCLite dialer and the connectoid VMCLite both work. All I did was to install on Windows XP machine. Copy resulting directory \program Files\Vodafone\VMClite from XP machine to Vista machine, add in all files from Vodem\CD Root as well. Export HCU and HKLM VMCLite registry keys and launch dialer from VMC_PbStart. Its a little bit fragile but usable. There is no 3G let alone broadband here in Kapitit but a decent 2G connection opened up. SetupE220dongle.exe installs the device drivers. There is also some other E220 appplications here: http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=736 which I havent tried. Nevertheless its a bit tentative and Vista complains about devices not installing on device insertion but after a couple of minutes that resolves and one can proceed. At one point the VMClite app launched a connection for a software update to http://update-vmclite.vodafone.com/release/vmc_newrelease.html but I got an authentication challenge and couldnt proceed.

Cheers,
Steve Cooney
