Went from Orcon where I could download a 350MB file in 10 minutes to Telstra where it takes 40 minutes to download half as much.

Telstra tell me my line can achieve 17mb down and 1.2mb up, so what gives?

Depends where the file was hosted, whether it's exactly the same file you were downloading before. If Telstra/Orcon had a cache server

Lots of things really!




I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

What does a speedtest say? Are you on Cable or ADSL?

Where are you located? What router are you using? Is your PC connected via WiFi or ethernet cable?

Please post the modem stats.

No info = no way to help...

I'd have thought you're acustom to my more abstract posting nature by now.  :)

The thread I linked had a great deal of information in it about issues that relate to Telstra performance v's another provider.  Many issues are discussed.

In suggesting the OP read it, I was hoping they would read it and consider the range of issues presented to give them some food for thought and help them ask some more qualified questions.

So...new problem. I can't connect wirelessly.

Wired connection, fine, wireless it has the stupid yellow triangle with ! in the middle. Everyone else on the network with a laptop can connect wireless.

What information should I provide?

Is this a new router? Have you ever connected this laptop to this router via wireless? Is the router applying a filtered MAC list to block "unknown" devices from joining? Is the Wireless adapter on the laptop configured to get automatic IP settings or manually configured?

New router, Belkin N300

No I have not connected it wirelessly

How do I check the MAC list?

Yes automatic settings.

If brand new, then MAC is probably not filtered... Since this is a N router

a) Is it set to 802.11 n mode only?
a) If it is set to 802.11 n mode only, does your laptop supports 802.11 n?

As asked before; is this on DSL or Cable? If you are on cable you need to enter the Cable Modems IP config into the Wireless Router. If not: DHCP should be working and good luck :o)
