I've always wondered about these:

Line Rental - $39.94
Wiring Maintenance - $3.05

We had line rental when we had SkyTV (through Sky) as well.

What exactly are these charges for?

Are you on cable or copper?

line rental is for the cable running into your house and local calling,

Wiring Maintenance is like insurance if you have issues with wiring in your house the carrier will send around a tech to resolve the issue

We have a cable from the street to our modem for TV (I think?) and a cable running into the modem for internet (that might be copper cabling?)

We were with telecom, so whatever they use from the street into the house is what we have (I'm guessing copper)?

Hi

I also questioned this charges and I was told it was purely for the Phone Line.
SO I had a look and worked out I could cancel my phone line. I have done so and now use 2Talk and pay around $6 a month for and 04 number.

This is not just telstra that does it. You will see it on all the ISP that give you a phone line.

Voip is the way to go..

fastie: so how do you get your internet to your place? If you have cancelled your Phone line? You divert your 04 number to your cell phone? and use data from your Cell phone?

I have cable from Telstra, but you can get naked broadband now from most of the top players
So I have internet with no phone line. (There is a physical phone line in my house but does not work)
