In the year or so I have been living in this house I have been noticing a large quantity of ADSL Disconnections on my line, Ranging from a single disconnection to on occasion hours where the line just disconnects then reconnects.

In this time I have made a number of calls to the help desk and have had visits from multiple Tech's, Some which have confirmed the problem others which deny it exists.

I have tried alternative equipment of everything on my end (Modem, Cables, Filters as well as full isolation tests), Everything from the Demarc in has been replaced during tech visits as well as being shortened and extremely simplified when I originally moved in (Cable in->Cable through concrete wall->Jackpoint with no other wiring or jackpoints connected).

My Primary modem is a Linksys WAG120N but I also have a Huawei MT882 I purchased to try due to assumed better compatibility with Vodafone's Red Network Equipment however the problem still occurs in an identical manner.

The latest tech appears to have put me on a "More Stable" line profile which has given me a drop in line speeds, This has made the original disconnection problem occur less however I have since been noticing connection instability which I can only imagine occurs at the times where on the previous line profile the connection would have dropped.

Due to my close proximity to the Glenfield exchange I am on the Red network and I believe I am on a non-cabinetised line.

Due to the way the line runs into my house it would be rather difficult to install a master filter however I have cherry-picked line filters over the past year and most potential internal line issues should not be a factor due to the setup (There is also very little noticeable difference in line speed during isolation tests without a filter connected at all)

I generally connect on Annex M where possible however I have noticed the same issues across all Modulation Types, Annex M appears to be fairly stable in comparison to the others and provides a small but welcome increase in upload compared to the alternatives although not the 3.5Mbps it theoretically could provide.

I am about to call the Vodafone call center once again and although they do seem to provide great and very competent service I am not all that hopeful my problem will be resolved as everything seems to fall apart once Chorus get involved.

Line stats will follow once I dig up older screenshots and switch over to the Single Port Huawei Modem which gives much more detailed connection information.

My question is what can I do?

Whoops, Wall of text but I tried to cover every one of the usual questions people ask and give as much detail as possible...

I would wait for this storm to pass, All this rain might make it more difficult

Get a master filter installed I know you have advised it's difficult but it should help

Current Speedtest on Huawei MT882 (Usually syncs a bit over and above my Linksys)

Current Line Stats.

This is a screenshot I took in January before the last tech came out, It shows a decreased sync speed which also occurs during periods of disconnections and this was before I was placed onto a different line profile.

I also forgot to mention in my first post that when the problem is occurring and it keeps re-syncing and dropping the Down and Up sync speeds often drop such as shown however the Down speed does not always do so but the Up speed is almost always lower if the connection keeps dropping.

Without a master filter your internal wiring could easily be causing these issues. Unless you've performed a full isolation test and replicated the issue running the modem by itself direct from the demarc with nothing else connected then installing a master filter is the first step.

IMHO a master filter should be mandatory for every ADSL2 install.

I have performed a full isolation test and have gone as far as to wire an ADSL Modem directly to the Demarc point previously when I noticed corrosion on the Jackpoint and didn't have a spare handy at the time, During all isolation tests as well as while I had the modem directly wired in I still noticed the problem. (I also tried the second modem in these configurations)

There is a total of about 40cm of internal wiring in the house from the Demarc which has been entirely replaced multiple times.

Corrosion on the jackpoint will cause issues. You won't know if it's the cause of your problems however until you replace it.

What you really need to do is pay the $199 to Chorus for a full master filter install.

The jackpoint has been replaced about 4 times since then, Also after crimping a cable to the modem directly to the lead in cable from the street and noticing the exact same problem along with the exact same speeds how could it be an issue?

I am becoming increasingly tempted just to buy a Master filter myself and install it (Don't have the $200 and I'm perfectly capable of doing the wiring myself) however I am a little perplexed on how to mount it half way up a brick wall, Slightly below a window which is actually in my bedroom about 30cm from where I sit right now.

Hi, I assume you are saying that the line comes in and straight to the jack shown and taps off nowhere else yet you still get disconnection issues, maybe the 9dB noise margin that Voda have provisioned is a little too keen for your line and the level of other DSL users in the bundle, maybe ask voda to put you on a more conservative profile (ie 12dB noise margin) the sync speed will probably drop a small amount but dropout may stop.

Cheers
Cyril

This is one of the things they have done and I am still on that profile at the moment see pic labeled "Current Line Stats" above.

While this does eliminate some of the disconnections there are still days with large numbers of disconnections as well as the occasional times where the connection becomes very unstable (Pages not loading but sync and PPP connection not dropping) which I can only imagine is a time where the connection would have normally dropped but is holding on because of the more robust profile.

Also Yes, This caused my Sync speed to drop from just under 20Mbps to 16Mbps.

Ummm, the last pic still shows a 9dB noise margin, so maybe that could be adjusted by Voda, does DMT tools work with that modem, if so you can alter the noise margin (but only till it reboots) yourself to see if it helps.

By the way if that wiring you have shown is all there is, ie it taps off to no other outlets then a master filter will most likely achieve little, if it does go else where then there may be some merit.
