Just out of curiosity. I really hope they do, becuase then we can get speeds faster then the normal adsl we have. It will give Aucklanders more of a chance to choose from. Why is it only limited to Wellington, and Christchurch?

You may have heard of fibre to the home (Chorus have started rollout in Auckland), this really makes TelstraClear HFC network obsolete. Rollout in Christchurch was stopped around 2000? as not economically viable so they will not be extending to Auckland.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

The rollout was planned for Auckland in ~2000 and was abandoned for a number of reasons - one of the biggst factors being that both local bodies and power companies essentially prevented them from gaining access to power poles to run cables on.

As for faster speeds VDSL2 is already available to somewhere in the vicinity of 40% of the population and delivers 50Mbps down and 10Mbps up which is faster than the plans currently offered on TCL cable.

Yep, you guys have nailed it.

The network was first in Wellington because that's where the company started. Around 1999-2000 the decision was made to extend to Christchurch, in part due to its topography. There were plans to rollout to Auckland in 2001. Then Telstra Saturn was sold and became Telstra Clear. The network expansion (in Christchurch by that point) was officially "paused" in 2001, and never resumed.

An application was submitted to the then-Auckland City Council in late 2001-early 2002 to rollout the cable network, but a lot of people opposed it, and eventually Telstra Clear went quiet on the plans and dropped them.

It definitely has been a bit of a sad note that it was never extended to Auckland for at least 10 years now and may well be still a bit of a sad note for a few years to come until FTTH becomes fully active, More so if Wellington and ChCh get a full DOCSIS 3 rollout.

oh okay thanks for that. Will the fibre to the home be used for television, and will be be like the USA, and have Cable TV via fibre? Or is it just for internet?

On another note. Is there a website, which shows where the fibre has been laid? I was looking at the fibre on the vector website. Is that the fibre that chous is laying, or is it a totaly different project all together.

When fibre to the home is completed, will we notice really that much of an increase in speeds because we really do have horrible bandwith, when it comes to overseas data. It's all an overpriced Monopoly if you ask me.

Fibre to the home will be used for all kinds of services, Due to the medium used the amount of traffic that it can sustain scales almost infinitely, It is entirely up to the service providers which types of service they want to provide over it.

Finding the status of a fibre rollout in your area seems to be like asking for trade secrets at the moment so I would suggest not getting your hopes up, However there are certain areas where the UFB rollout is displayed on the Service Availability Tool below.

When the rollout is completed and your line is switched over there will be a significant increase in bandwidth however this will be more noticeable to those who are currently on extremely bad lines and those who transmit large amounts of data.

Strangely enough International transit is not as expensive as you would expect but yes, ISP's do seem to be bleeding money somewhere.

The Wellington/Kapiti and Christchurch networks are 100% DICSIS3 compatible. The only reason it's not available is purely a business decision, not helped by the availability of DOCSIS3 modems. There are paying users on the DOCSIS3 network.

TV via fibre in the US is typically delivered using RF over fibre rather than IPTV. I doubt we will see that in NZ, it makes a lot of sence, but only if you're trying to replicate an existing satellite or cable tv distribution network.

Or maybe you mean Sky will use the fibre to deliever IPTV services and Telstraclear's DVB-C cable TV service will completely disappear. We'll wait and see.

It is sad, but technology has moved on a bit since then. Makes me wonder sometimes if Telstra Saturn hadn't been bought by Clear if the rollout would have indeed gone ahead. Of course, having all the Auckland mayors opposing it didn't help much.
