I had a very similar model and it wouldn't work on my mums xtra account so she was stuck with the Thompson.

Yes this modem will work on any ADSL ISP in NZ. Vodafone don't lock modems.

So that's where everyone's getting them from.
Change the default admin username/password, enable ACLs and disable access to it from WAN on any port. They're insecure.

So were the Thomson units that Telecom were supplying. Free internet around most of Wellington anyone?

TP Link units seem to be surprisingly reliable, I've used a number of their products and have had a lot less reliability issues than I have with significantly more expensive products. Good value for money.

Yeah i read quite a few recommendations for tp link, which is surprising given that they are budget.

What is ACL?

I changed all the router's default passwords for admin/support/user
Wireless is password protected with disabled SSD broadcast

Isn't that enough?

Yeah - it's pretty good, but disabling access from the outside would discourage anyone from trying to brute force it.
Under the "Management" settings you' find ACL (Access Control List). It decides who has access to control the unit, on what ports and from what direction (eg. LAN or WAN)

Access Control -- Services

A Service Control List ("SCL") enables or disables services from being used.

Services LAN WAN
HTTP ON OFF
ICMP ON ON
TFTP ON OFF

I assume the default settings are fine, or should I disable ICMP:WAN?

i guess it depends on whether you care about echoing ICMP requests.
should definitely switch telnet off on the WAN side.
