Yes, I have vague memories of going to a Geekzone event in 2005 where people were playing with Vodafone NZ's first 3G capable handset. I think it was a Sharp model.
Do we really have 5G until we have 5G standalone? 😉
It's a matter of network evolution and the applications/services supported.

Definitely remember that device and its ability to video call! Wild!

Considering the 850mhz/900mhz band 5 and band 8 are pretty useless with how much 700mhz b28 is around, here's hoping after the shutdown they refarm it to standalone.

@alasta SonyEricsson V800? I had one for the 3G trial before public launch
Yes, I remember that one now, but I'm pretty sure there was a Sharp and a Nokia model launched at the same time.
Sharp GX10? Think that was the first camera phone but think it was only 2G.
What do we do if we still don’t have 4G signal?

I noticed on RNZ this am they said 3G has been around this 2009. Hmmmm, think it was launched 4 years prior, but hey: who’s counting?
Well before 2009

@Geektastic You will have 4G if you get 3G currently

The Sony Ericsson T68i was was released a little bit before the Sharp, only thing was you had to purchase the camera separately and clip it onto the phone. I got mine a little before the official release and used it for a couple of years!

So long as the phone supports the bands for 4g. Plenty of old junk androids did the bare minimum of lte bands.

It’s an iPhone 15PM so I’m sure that won’t be a problem.
It’s just that where we live we get about 2 bars of service, 85% of the time in 3G with sporadically a 1 bar 4G connection for the remainder.

@Geektastic So you will be better off when the 3G network is closed down

I will? I'll still only have a couple of bars of service, whatever number G it is!
Without the Starlink at home, we'd be frustrated data users for sure. And yet we are a massive 30 minutes from Chch International Airport, not in the bundu somewhere.
