I'm worried the wizard might punch me right in the face :)
Is he still around? He must be 110 by now! (Age, not decibels)
nah... only 85 :)

As I mis-posted in another forum, casting my mind back to when I was a student, it also occurs to me that this system could be an interesting magnet for hackers - and doing so might be seen as an excellent capping day stunt.
I recall that a similar system that puts alerts onto TV and radio broadcasts was hacked in Montana in 2013, and a barrage zombie apocalypse messages such as "Civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves" were sent out.
Which I would usually applaud as a funny gag. But not if it woke me at 2am, or repeatedly through the night.
I hope they have appropriately hardened the system.
And if something like that happened it would be a very good reason to want to be able to disable the alerts without switching my phone off entirely.
Issues of whether or not the system is a good idea, I deplore the current trend for carriers and vendors to reduce users' control over the devices they have paid for and own outright. If I own a computing device I ought to be able to decide what software it will run, and what "features" are enabled or disabled. It's pretty arrogant for someone else to go over the top of me and assert that they have that right instead of me.

Wife and I both got it at 6:16pm as well. As I have my iPhone on perma silent it just vibrated with no audible sound, hers wasn't too loud either (Nexus 5X).. but found it funny that her Nexus 5X started reading out the alert message
Wife and I just got ours both on 2DM, both on iphone.
When I hit the home button the message went away, there is no way that I can see to go back to see the message.
Work Voda has not gone off yet.

I know enough to be dangerous
Interestingly, although my son's iPhone (SE, iOS 11.1) received the alert, it didn't make a noise (and it wasn't on silent). Mine received it and made the annoying noise.

We're waiting to see if the missus's phone gets this alert thing. She got a new Samsung back in June. No idea what model it is.
None of the phones in my house received the alert. iPhone 5s, Samsung S4, Sony Z1 compact.
