My Spark phone dropped to 3G while I was in the Whakatane CBD a couple of nights ago (specifically inside Cobb & Co if anyone's that interested). I know RF's a black art but you'd think that L700 would penetrate buildings better than U850.

Spark doesn't even have working mobile service in their own Hornby retail store, with the rest of the mall has either 1 bar or no service - despite that the store is more-or-less facing towards their tower. One NZ has this sorted with their own equipment in the mall, I believe.

With Spark in Hornby more generally, their 5G is tuned so incredibly poorly that the UE will continue hold on to it with sub-10 Mbps downloads but the upload is so slow (well belong 1 Mbps) as to be functionally unusable. The service might as well be 3G because I have to turn 5G off every time I travel into the area, which is often.

This happens on multiple phones and I've spoken with other people in the community who faced the same issue, so I went in to speak with the store staff recently - they said that Spark knows about this, yet doesn't appear to be doing anything to fix it. I've been facing the issue since at least August last year when I first signed up and have logged a fault yet seen no discernible improvements. This same issue happens in a number of areas in Christchurch. Oddly, I've not seen it happen anywhere else in the country.

FWIW there is no 3500 MHz in Hornby.

Surprised that 0.25% of Sparks total network data traffic was able to still be sent over 3G. Got to admire the perseverance!

L700 is much better, it’s been intentionally reduced so it didn’t have a larger footprint than U850 - as mentioned above: once 3G is turned off, telcos will be able to tune their respective L700 bands

There is now 1 less 3G phone on the Spark network.

Managed to get a Mobiwire Flip phone for mum, and the nice people in the Spark shop (yes, I know!) changed everything over.

This meant a new sim card, and copying all 31 of her contacts over.

It took me about half an hour to find where to increase the ring volume, but we're all good now.

Ha... 2degrees has 5G in the Hub Hornby Mall. Even in the supermarket where Spark has 0 reception. One NZ has in-building 4G in the supermarket so their customers are covered. AC

Interesting. Wonder why they can't come to an agreement to share access to the DAS.

What Xiaomi?

The older ones won't do emergency calling over volte/wifi so you may want to check that...

This was my experience for months until Xiaomi finally pushed a firmware update with VoLTE enabled.

PB has a page with the unlock codes for both VoLTE and VoWifi to remove the software locks, Although VoLTE is great definitely been an improvement having VoWifi back on that handset.

I have done the codes to enable it, and it didnt drop back when I did a 0800 call on it. Its not due for topping up for a while so when that happens I will cycle it thru another phone to use up the data from topping it up. I only keep those numbers active incase I need them for account recovery since google cling to phone numbers like people never change them.

I think many of the installs are actually quite simple affairs and not full-blown DAS systems. At several malls I've observed small picocells covering just the One NZ store and/or small internal panel antennas just serving the part of the Mall that has the 2degrees store. One NZ is a bit odd in that they put in picocells even in stores that already get good service from the local macro site. I guess it's a bit of an insurance policy to ensure staff can consistently show off good nework performance. I suspect if it wasn't for their retail store they'd not bother. I think the only mall I've seen Spark make an effort has been 277 in Newmarket and Commercial Bay in Auckland CBD. Almost every other Auckland malls Spark just relies on nearby macro sites. Whereas One NZ seem to try and make an effort in most (if not all) the malls they have retail presence in. 2degrees seem to sensibly do it on a case by case -- the only one I know of is Hunters Plaza in Papatoetoe which struggles to receive good coverage on any network in some parts of the building so understandable 2degrees has put in some gear there.

Bringing this back on topic - one advantage of 3G going away is that perhaps we'll see more investiment into RCG 4G coverage in malls. So far RCG has put in 4G MORAN coverage inside Manawa Bay mall near AKL airport, inside the IKEA store at Sylvia Park, various retirement villages, and I'm sure there are other interesting RCG urban deployments coming. The only downside is no RCG 5G (yet) which puts some locations (e.g. IKEA) in the awkard position of having excellent 5CA 4G/5G service ouside but dropping back to single carrier 4G inside once the UE attaches to the RCG cell. Win some lose some I guess.

This implies we're waking up to no 2d 3G tomorrow

Isn't that "slider" backwards? Off is to the left on every phone I've seen.

Today on the monthly pilgrimage to Costco I saw a whole lot of grey on the map in the Tesla and again on the top road towards the upper harbour bridge. When I have bothered looking in the past it was trying to use 3g in those locations.

Do users of sparks network really deal with that, or is it just still an artifact of the roaming problems that spark has? I hope that 3g going away might help with those problems.

I must see if the 3g shutdown helps with the bottom of Onewa road too. Come on spark, catch up with 2degrees. Lagging behind but that seems to be expected.
