@CNZ Should be a new thread but just change to the $65 endless plan. For a couple of dollars more you get more data - there is no cost increase on that plan it seems - appears the cost increase is only on the $59 plan.

More of an "Your not alone" post.

It seems that all the companies are looking to see how much they can squeeze out of their customers.

My advice:
Check how much it costs for a plan that meets your needs from Spark, One NZ, 2 Degrees, Skinny, Warehouse Mobile and Kogan. Don't be afraid to change companies as necessary to get a reasonable deal.

I'm sure that these companies rely on inertia - people reluctant to change. If customers would more readily move to the competition then they would have to keep their prices more competitive.

I've been thinking about what I'll do with my mobile plan.

When I joined Warehouse Mobil I was thinking: $4 per month for data = $48 per year, 2c per txt would probably cost me <$4 per year. I make so few calls that at 4c per min I would go through <$4 per year. $48 + $4 + $4 = $56 and then maybe I need another data pack because I used more than normal = $60 per year, that is pretty darned cheap for a years worth of mobile usage.

Since then they have increased txts from 2c to 4c to 8c to 16c, trying very hard to push as many customers as possible to pay the $4 per month for unlimited texts (or buy their bundles and set auto-renewal). The calls have also gone up from the 4c per min to 16c per min. The data has gone from 12 x $4 to 13 x $4 (not all that big an increase and on its own I'd just suck it up). With txts now 8x the price and calls now 4x the price then maybe I'm looking at $52 for data (up $4) and $32 for txts (8x the original $4) and $16 for calls (4x the original $4) for a total of $100 per year instead of $60. If I go through all my data a couple of extra times and end up buying a couple more data packs then it could end up $108 (where it would originally have been pushing up to $68) for a year. If WM can get $100 - $110 per year from me instead of $60 - $70 then they make $40 more from me, multiply that by thousands of customers and it is easy to see why it is a good idea - for them.

From my point of view: If I have to pay $100 - $110 per year with WM, what would it cost elsewhere? Kogan had a special where I could pay $112 for 365 days of mobile where I would get 1.5GB of data per month (3 times what I was buying from WM) and unlimited txts (no need to worry what a txt would cost me) and unlimited calls (I don't make many calls, but I possibly would make more if they were all free). I could pay Kogan $5 for a SIM card and a month of usage, then $15 per month until there is another good special, at which point I could pay for 365 days of Kogan mobile and for very little different cost to what I'm now paying WM I could have a lot more.

The bottom line: I was saving a decent amount of money with WM by paying for a data pack each month and paying per txt and per min for txts and calls, but now I'm not really saving much so maybe it is time to ditch them. The great casual rates on texting and phone calls made it worth not worrying about buying the packs/bundles, now if I'm being pushed to pay for all 3 packs or a bundle then I'm looking around and Kogan seem to be offering more for the money. WM has improved some things (longer rollover period for example) but has been getting greedier on how they charge, I'm starting to think of them less favourably and am seriously considering taking my money elsewhere.

The only thing I'm wondering right now is how often Kogan offer up a good discount on their 365 day packages.

I'm looking to switch to Kogan when they have the next promo on the 365 day plans also with WM.

The 28 days and 14 days thing is a huge benifit for most people which is why things are moving to it, as that means that people run out on the same day of the week which will probably be payday. Expect more things to move to this and away from monthly cycles.

Hmm.  28 day months give you 13 months basically.   Does that  mean that people on 30 day i.e 15th of the month  monthly wages will get an extra payday for free.  The 28 day billing cycle is a rort as far as I'm concerned. If it's such a benefit why hasn't the pay monthly plans  gone to 28 day months??

Latest Kogan offer

25% off Kogan Mobile 365 Day SIM Plans (Small $120, Medium $187, Large $247) @ Kogan Mobile (Ends 21/05/23) (geekzone.co.nz)

A while ago I saw the small plan at $112 ($48 off) this current offer has it at $40 off, not really all that big a difference and either way a decent saving off the normal price. Even more saving compared to the monthly price, much better to pay $10 than $15 just by paying a year ahead.

So, I have gone ahead and paid $120, I guess I should have my SIM card next week sometime.

There have been times where I have decided not to ring someone because on WM if I end up talking to someone on the phone for 10 minutes, there is $1.60 gone, but once I have my Kogan plan up & running a phone call will cost nothing, so I suspect I'll be using the phone more. Similarly, a few texts back and forth for a work issue at 16c each, starts to add up - it was a non-issue at 2c each but ever since it changed to 16c I have felt almost pushed into the $4/28d pack - now it won't be a problem and I can happily send texts whenever I want. As long as I use WiFi when I can I'll be fine to use my phone as much as I like for the next year, all for the cost of only $10 per month. We have definitely come a long way from the early days of mobile phones where you could easily run up $10 in usage costs within a day or two of light use.

My SIM card arrived, I activated it and transferred my phone number - everything went smoothly! Now I'm no longer a WM customer and also I will no longer recommend them to friends or family, I will switch my recommendation to Kogan for anyone wanting a good deal.

Each have got their place. Not everyone is as lightweight on usage as you.

I’m with 2degrees for my phone, wife is with Spark, some of my family is with Skinny. The point I’m trying to make is there is no single provider that fits everyone perfectly. Costs are going up everywhere.

Very true, and I certainly wouldn't expect my recomendation for a great value provider to be taken up by everyone that I know. There are many factors to consider before deciding what provider/plan best fits a person's use-case.

Unlimited talk is what I like best on Kogan mobile plans.

TBH I don't see how this is a benefit for anyone?

Even if it aligns with your pay cycle, you'll have less carryover data.

Also warehouse mobile haven't updated their auto top-up to align with this change. It's still monthly. So my flow of auto-topup once a month and buying the pack is broken; I now need to manually top up when the pack expires. (You can automate the combos, but I only want data.)

Most people on a salary, I'd wager, get paid monthly.
