Kiwi Mobile tackles NZD $400 million in wasted mobile data

Research has revealed that New Zealanders are losing approximately NZD $400 million annually on unused mobile data. Kiwi Mobile, a new competitor in the mobile market, aims to address this issue with the launch of its Endless mobile plan, which charges users only for the data they actually consume.

dazzanz:

I think Kogan is still the best value. If you buy it when they have the 2 for 1 deal (usually August and New Year?) it ends up at about $13 per month for 15GB per person per month.

Kogan have been quite on promos lately but mighty mobile has had a few lately which is also owned by Kogan.

If someone uses less then 5GB a month data is going to go to waste on Kiwi Mobile as minimum purchase. I’d rather spend $27 for 4GB on Skinny, have unused data roll over, then switch to $17 plan to use up the data rolled over. Have 10 GB at moment so will drop plan down next month.

$40 Skinny gives 10 GB, full speed, then endless data 28 days  vs $39.54 for Kiwi Mobile 5GB full speed, then endless a month so still a better deal elsewhere there as well.

Can use data binge also on Skinny if need faster data temporarily when out of full speed data.

Just pointing out there are use cases where this is not a deal, for bigger users it possibly is. Roll over data allows flexibly for small and bigger months.

I’ve used Skinny price comparisons as it is the one I’m familiar with meaning less research.

Kind of strange to me that they have a stop-sell on new power customers but are now entering the cut throat mass telecommunications market

Looking at their FAQ It's post pay account  only

Do you offer Prepay?

At this stage we don't offer prepay, but you can choose what payment date works for you whether it's weekly, fortnightly or monthly (you can even pick the day that works for you).

If you want to have more control over your mobile data usage or spend, you can choose Slow Down mode. In Slow Down mode, you choose your preferred tier limit. When you reach your tier limit you’ll get Endless Data at reduced max speeds of 1.2mbps and your daily rate will not increase.

Yeah,

Their core business is about to be burnt to the ground by the Spot Market, and they decide they can make money being a MVNO....

Although TBH, I suspect many of the newer MVNOs are simply there to add another product to bundle and increase their  customer stickiness

If you receive your SIM before the activation date, don't expect to get the date changed even through their website says you can

I’ve just received my SIM, now what?

Your physical SIM card will be automatically activated on your selected connection date. If you want to get going sooner, drop us a line on live chat.

#Update

Just signed up to Mighty Mobile 365 day plan for $399.20 for 12 months which comes to $33.26 per month - Unlimited Data at 50 mbps, unlimited calls+ text to NZ and AU.

I have a 5 yr old OnePlus 7T pro running a hotspot right now as I type this and the speeds are amazing! Switched over from Spark prepaid after 11 years and the number porting was smooth - done in 20 minutes.

SpeedTest result below on full auto settings via my laptop which is tethered to the phone's hotspot and also running a VPN.

Kiwi Mobile has called me, left a voicemail, emailed me and sent text messages multiple times because they want to take my mobile number for "operational reasons". What on earth.

Misprinted a number on some very important document, perhaps?
