quickymart: Does this guy have a valid point?

No. Spectrum is a limited resource and wasting it on old modulations for people who want to hang onto legacy gear is a bad use of it. He should be more angry at whoever sold him a 3g alarm recently. And it if was not recent then there is no reason to complain.

A classic case of he had no idea it was shutting down and now it's everybody else's fault he didn't know and isn't compensating him. Apparently he notices that his phone roams on 3G when he's overseas though...

He should be, but he isn't:

Simms said he didn’t blame his alarm company. The New Zealand Security Association had a drive for its members to give customers an early heads-up about the need to upgrade to 4G- or 5G-compatible alarms – especially if their system was bought before 2018.

I see that he's the guy who started Tomizone. He's actually a member here, but he hasn't posted since 2013.

South Island (ex. Christchurch) 3G shutdown on One NZ is now complete (as of last night). That was quick!

I think boosacnoodle means South Island excluding Christchurch?

Interestingly my phone dropped down briefly in Auckland museum yesterday to 2g (and a fair bit of 3g) on One. I hadn't seen 2g in the wild for years!

That's definitely a dead zone for signal on all carriers anyway

Northland One NZ 3G has gone dark, except for Dargaville. They have left that on until @linux upgrades his phone to a 4G/5G compatible one.

I'm on a network that provides zero 3G NZ wide already

A friend of mine is currently in Arizona and he actually found a pocket of EDGE yesterday! Apparently there's no 3G over there, but 2G is still alive and kicking.

That was the business when the most demanding thing was opening you WAP browser, or tethering your Palm pilot over IR.

I remember tethering my Palm Pilot to my Nokia 6210 via a clip-on adaptor cable. I could check emails, sync my contacts & calendar.
