Moved down the road a couple of Km and it was fine.  I guess technology moves on.

Like everything else, the B747, NEAX, Analogue TV, Audio Cassette, Carbon Paper, all biting the dust!

Linux: The issue with turning off 3G is inbound roaming customers! Until VoLTE roaming is done on a large scale it would be a silly move

Vodafone still have 2g, last I tried it, still worked for voice calls.

2G will also remain longer than 3G because certain technical services run over it. We switched off 3G completely here at the end of the last year and almost no one noticed (except for a few mobile phones from the stone age).

So phones that don't have VoLTE are out of the stone age.   I bet there a a million or so phones out there that won't be able to make calls if 3G is shutdown.

Not everyone is as rich as you and buys new phones every year or two. There are lots of old people out there with candy bars and older smart phones  and the like that are 3G  and maybe 4G  but I bet  none of them will do  VoLTE.   Unless the telcos give at least 2 to 3 years notice that 3G will be closed down I would assume the likes of Consumer would be on the case fairly quickly.

The majority of rcg sites are VOLTE only so the onus is not on the mobile providers to maintain 3G enabled sites. All 3G networks in the US are now switched off excluding the Verizon CDMA network which shuts down in two months.

Yes I know all the US except for Verizon's CDMA is being switched off and I believe that gets switched off  end of this year and Australia buy the middle of 2024. Maybe we should plan for the end of 2024..

Australia hasn't a rural 4G only network like RCG sites here.  3G radio spectrum is better used for 4G or 5G as the practice in some other countries in the world.

Indeed, with a 5G coverage of >86.5% and a 4G coverage of 99% (4G since 10 years) we could afford it. 6G for all is currently planned here to be ready in 2030.

No different to when there have been the other network switch offs in the past with old people and old phones and not wanting to spend money.

What is a problem is place selling phones with no 4g or no volte on them new right now. I expect that a CGA case against them is possible for not working as a phone when expected.

Why single out "old people"?

how about just 'people with older phones that meet their needs not wanting waste money on new phones.'

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

@MikeB4

Technology updates are ongoing if I have to buy a VOLTE handset so be it. I can still use whatsapp for text, voice, video calling etc.
