gmball:

I'd be interested in knowing whether they will offer roaming?

I find it interesting that these MVNO players are entering the market, how is this not canabilising revenue from established players like One and Spark?

I'm currently with One NZ, so realistically moving to Mighty mobile shouldn't result in any noticeable performance compromises.. just lower prices.

How does this make financial sense for One NZ? Are they planning their own new plans to compete with the 365 day plans offered by new entrants?

It’s a case of ‘if you can’t fight ‘em, join ‘em!’

Yes, One NZ will lose customers to Mighty Ape, but it’s better to lose them to MA and keep a rev stream, albeit a lower ARPU, than have the customer churn to another telco - 2d/spark. Plus, Mighty Ape will be bringing customers over from the other 2 telcos (and their MVNOs) increasing One’s overall connections

Hope this makes sense

Some more info now here

Notably minimum of 4G capable phone.

Is that 4g for data only or does it requre a phone that supports volte and there would be no support for the 3g network at all.

It wouldn't supprise me as the One NZ network that they run on will shutdown 3g in just under a years time. So it would be pretty silly to support it on your new provider for like 11 months then need to deal with people sudenly not having phones that no longer work.

Their 2g network will be running for several more years, so there’s not too much urgency for people to get VoLTE compatible devices just yet

When Vodafone UK (and I believe some of the other UK operators) introduced the 'unlimited at xx mbps' type of plans I was really hoping VFNZ would follow suit. I was fairly disappointed with the 'x GB full speed then throttle to x mbps' approach that they ended up going with (along with 2degrees/Spark who seem to just copy each other).

My usage is highly variable -- I can go from 1-5gig one month (e.g. I'm home attached to wifi most of the time) to 20-30 gigs the next month (e.g. I'm travelling more often and avoiding broken public wifi).

So for my use case I'm generally better off with either rollover (which is slowly disappearing) or an unmetered plan with reasonable mbps constraints.

I never need high speed data (e.g. 50mbps+). Even 5mbps would be fine for me 99.9% of the time.

Interesigly I am currently with Kogan on their annual 15gb a month plan which is a pain in the backside when I exceed my monthly allowance. The cost of a few gigs of extra data is more expensive than the 15gb monthly cost so obivously Kogan makes good money out of the excess data charges.

So this is something I am definitely keeping an eye on. in Auckland I find the One network is better than the alternatives so good that they've gone with them rather than 2deg/Spark.

I really hope other carriers pick up this sort of plans -- but if this is the only one on the market when my annual Kogan plan runs out I'll probably switch to this.

The only downside I can see is the limited roaming options, but for the few times I go overseas I can just pop in a VFNZ/2degrees prepaid sim or purchase a local SIM.

Not specified on the linked page:

A compatible 4G mobile phone device is required to access our 4G Plans and Services.

It's possible that it is 4/5g only and their relationshio with One NZ excludes 2/3g. One for them to provide more info on probably.

It'll be VoLTE required as One, Spark and 2Degrees will all be shutting down 3G before the end of 2025, so in no more than 2 years from now.

I doubt that they'd block 2G/3G, its just cleaner for them to advertise it as a 4G or higher service (therefore no/limited shutdown assistance required).

Kogan doesn't charge for excess data? You only buy packs with set data allocations.

On a side note - When I'm back in NZ, I'm keen to move my folks over to Kogan (packs, not flatrate) as they're extremely light users... however the lack of traditional customer service will be interesting.

Not off to a good start.

Sim arrived.

retail sim packaging was already opened, but it was in there so shrug.

Put in phone and it said I will get a SMS.

No SMS came

Waited ages - still no SMS.

Only got the SMS when I changed to try to use the data on the sim.

Opened the link and it wants me to sign in or sign up.

There is no sign up option, just sign in with fields for username and password.

Existing mightyape account details do not work. FAQ says its a different login.

Try to look on the website on desktop and the sign up option just redirects to mightyapes store to try to sell me another sim card.

Perhaps not the right wording. Once you run out of data, you have to pay extra for additional data and that does come in the form of as you describe "set data allocations". The cost $/GB is massively worse for the "set data allocations". For example the standard monthly cost works out to $27.12/15GB = $1.81/GB while the cheapest $/GB "set data allocations" is $21.90/3GB = $7.30/GB.

Doesn't look like a good experience at all. Hope they iron out the bugs in their process.

For anyone who doesn't get onboarding SMS - try flight mode on then off to reattach to the network. If that doesn't work, try making a phone call to generate a usage event to trigger it. If you've done that and you still don't get anything, check your junk/spam folder and confirm 7878 wasn't accidentally blocked as sender.

Mighty Mobile identity is not federated to Mighty Ape identity. If you try to sign-in using your Mighty Ape identity (or any email address not registered), you should be taken into the sign-up step where you can use the same details as you use with Mighty Ape (or another valid email address...)

Mine had that too. I guess they've added/removed something to the packaging once sealed. Not a good look, bit I got everything I was expecting.

I just used the "sign in with Google" option. Worked fine.

I never use Sign In with Google.

Google is too quick to lock accounts and you lose access to other services because of that.

Thats what I'm holding out for with Christmas coming up.
