MikeB4:

Why single out "old people"?

how about just 'people with older phones that meet their needs not wanting waste money on new phones.'

Because that was literally in the post I was replying to and IME that is the only group of people that will not upgrade as tech moves on past them.

I disagree. Age has nothing to do with it. Fixed income maybe, fiscal position maybe, sick of E waste maybe the reasons are many and varied. I have an employee that requested we supply a 'dumb' phone, the staff member is in their mid 20s. I am old and I have the latest kit.

I feel like even with RCG's reasonably rapid growth over the last few years, there's still going to be a lot of fringes that are still just reliant on 3G, even in 2024. Seems like it would be premature to switch it off without at least exceeding the 3G coverage in virtually every area.

They probably want that so they know you're not tracking them on the work phone when they're on call and have the phone with them.

That is one thing that I do find differs with old people, they seem to think that getting offered a work iphone is a good thing and a bonus of employment, Whereas they are shocked when they are turned down when offering a phone by their younger staff.

There is a $99 dumb phone from vodafone that lists 4g calling as a feature, there isnt a cost issue on the devices now.

The problem isn't with the telcos that seem to be selling phones that are fine on their own networks for 4g voice now, its with all the other retailers like PB tech etc that have phones with no volte on them, and no upgrade path because of the mess that is android.

IMO right now the only phone to get if you want certainty to be able to move across network providers is an iPhone. Everything else is too risky that you will pop another sim into it and find that nothing works properly.

@richms your first sentence is completely wrong in the case I mentioned. The second sentence is a continuation of your ageist attitude. I won't respond further

Being an unrepentant geek, I was an early adopter of "smart" phones but I found they're not physically practical and gone back to a "dumb" phone. Dumb phones are excellent for remaining in communication. Who ever thinks carrying a $1000, 5" piece of glass around in you pocket all day is a good idea, doesn't live in or use their phone in the real physical world.  Don't get me wrong, I still have several smart phones for interfacing with geeky stuff over blue tooth and taking photo's, but they don't live on my person.

Smart phones are designed to steal your time, not help you communicate. They have caused communication to deteriorate. In the past all you needed was a "phone" to talk and text. Now you need this app, that app and the other app, plus some other hot new tending app, and another app that wants a bl00dy pin number every morning! (that one can go get stuffed!). Oh and you need a brand new phone with the latest OS to communicate with the guy who shows their individuality by exclusively using the hot new trending app (and insisting on your conformity - ?!@#). Due to phones with the endless pop-ups and constant vying for attention, so many people set their phones to silent and don't take voice calls anymore. Perfect if you're trying to communicate with them eh?

One thing I increasing love about my "dumb" phone is its subservient obedience. It does exactly what I tell it to, when I tell it to and it flat out doesn't nag me - just like a machine should. Just using a smart phone for 10 minutes gets my blood boiling with all the ad's, google security pop-ups, Samsung/OEM account pop-ups, notifications about how long it has been since I ordered take-out or took a car ride, discount offers, apps that have updates available, suggested battery setting changes, questions about data and charging leads and security suggestions, mined areas of the screen that that kidnap your screen and take you to a random website or setting. Daphuk!

And I have a draw full of smart phones that can't do anything anymore (such as make a call) because their maker released an OS update that overwhelms their poor little processors. Another problem you don't have with "dumb" phones.

5G is more about short range, urban networks aka fixed wireless, so I don't think it will ever be 'widely' rolled out, especially in rural area's, which is most of New Zealand/the world. For you average ruralite, Starlink is of greater relevance than 5g.

For 3G to be shut down, VoLTE, has to improve. So many people have reliability and clarity issues on new phones that are solved by disabling VoLTE (it echo's the early days of 3G when the 2100 band was junk and you had to disable 3G to make calling reliable).

My computer and my router both do VoIP better than many phones/networks do VoLTE, which just should not be the case.

@tripper1000

In regards to VOLTE it is successfully used in other countries in the world including USA and Australia. VOLTE is being used here in NZ nationwide over the RCG network. In regards 5G tmobile in the  US is successfully using 5G in the 600 MHZ band. Verizon wireless and AT&T wireless are using the 700MHZ band for nationwide 5G in the US.

Correct as the older technology is progressively switched off.

@ajw They can keep the older technology on they don't need to turn it off

Smart networks can have 4G / 5G working in the same bit of spectrum

I find that clarity is much better over VOLTE - but that's because they ruined 3g voice just so that there was a selling point for VOLTE to exist. Bit annoying that my xiaomi doesnt do it but I so seldom use telco voice that its not a big deal.

Since we don't see 5G primarily as a telephony network (it is, after all, only a fraction) but as a DataLink for autonomous driving, traffic control, logistics, etc., it has a somewhat different status here in Germany. Along the motorways and in dense areas, network coverage is therefore inevitable.
