Not off to a good start.

Sim arrived.

retail sim packaging was already opened, but it was in there so shrug.

Put in phone and it said I will get a SMS.

No SMS came

Waited ages - still no SMS.

Only got the SMS when I changed to try to use the data on the sim.

Opened the link and it wants me to sign in or sign up.

There is no sign up option, just sign in with fields for username and password.

Existing mightyape account details do not work. FAQ says its a different login.

Try to look on the website on desktop and the sign up option just redirects to mightyapes store to try to sell me another sim card.

Pretty much this.

No SMS, log-in loop, no clear channel for support.

Have read support comments somewhere saying they're swamped so, yeah ..

. . .

Its no different than any other type of contract services/manufacturing model. These resellers are still going to enter the market, you can choose to work with them or not but they are still going to cannibalise your offering either way. The advantage of working with them is they can help you to absorb your fixed overheads. You make little to no margin off them but your fixed costs are spread over a greater volume making unit costs lower. It only make sense if you can do it without having to sink cash into capital improvements for extra capacity.

Wouldn't it make more sense for existing players to say no, knowing that new players are highly unlikely to go to the expense of building their own network?

It’s that sort of behaviour that got Telecom broken up. Most MVNOs don’t get particularly big so there’s not a lot for the big players to lose.

Saw some replies so thought I would update this.

Was not able to get another SMS to come thru at all when I tried again when I had some time to put into it (was waiting outside doing a trademe pickup for someone who was "just around the corner") - Power off and on, use data, try to make call - no SMS came.

Was able to make 0800 calls, was not able to make any other call.

Went into its SMS history (good thing I had not purged it like I usually do) and found it, and was in, and there was a sign up link. The link had not expired or anything.

Opened it on the mightape connection, Completed it ok. Activated ok.

Seems to work ok, but as I still have data on the 2 degrees sim also in that phone I am predominantly using that now.

This is in total contrast to the skinny sim process that I had to go thru with the demise of 2talk mobile which worked faultlessly. Perhaps it will be better for new users on Mighty mobile, but really not re-sending the SMS to activate it is inexcusable.

Got home and had some time to put into it. The login showed my 029 number in there, and I could call it and the phone rang, I could call 0800838383 from the mighty mobile sim fine, I could not call anything else - just sat there saying connecting.

The login wanted me to activate my service with the sim number, so messed about taking that out to read the number off it and put it into the site, it then texted me a 6 digit code to put in, and then told me it was activated and gave me the number that it had already shown me and worked fine.

So it looks like they just turn it off if there is nothing to charge the plan to, no SMS, no email, no captive portal login screen when you try to use data - it just stops working for anything outgoing and you have to give them the sim number to reactivate it.

Now it says I have no plan and wants me to pay $50 even tho I have probably only used it for a single month and it was supposed to be half price for 3 months. Time to jump on the support and see what they say.
