True, but what if the population mainly had 4g handsets? Wouldn't that alter the results?

No it would not. The results are the speeds the people are getting. Not what they could get if <Insert some better variable here>

KiwiSurfer:

I am personally with Kogan and pay $20-something a month for 15GB.

$20-something? The only 15GB monthly plan I see is $30-something, $35 to be exact.

Kogan is a good tool to use for comparison. Here in Aus $25 a month buys you 40GB.

Kiwis are being ripped off (Unfortunately possibly by an Aussie company too)

It's currently $20.55 /month on a 365 day plan. Definately $20 something not $35 and they periodically have better special pricing than that.

doesnt matter, its testing what people are using, giving you accurate results of the speedtest over the population of testers.

Surely the results are more sqewed due to the fact its likely more geekier people testing over grandma on her 3g big button phone who gets the odd message from the grand kids on facebook.

thats a yearly plan not a monthly one. not apples with apples.

generally always cheaper to buy something in bulk. but not everyone can afford that.

So just rollover data ..

No, data stack is not the same as rollover data. It's an additional data allowance that is added to your plan every month, on top of the base allowance. And the size of this additional stack grows by 100MB every month. Mine is currently around 6GB per month.

After a few years data stack is almost unrivalled in affordability and basically has totally locked me in to spark as I won't get this value elsewhere. With the bonus data tex they sent me this month's I'll have 8.5Gb for $20 plus rollover if I need it brings me up to 12Gb. Also works really well that they launched it 2 weeks in to my plan so now I get data stack and my plan data topping up at 2 week intervals, if I ever do run dry it's not long until more data will appear.

I do find our small allowance here annoying compared to Aus and the UK when you see exponentially more data for the same money, but the data stack thing is definitely easing that every month.

Not to rub any more salt into the wounds but I am with Woolworths Mobile (Now called everyday mobile), its not the cheapest plan with only 12GB for $20 per month, also has rollover. But I get 10% off our monthly shop at woolworths, this comes in pretty handy especially when you considering the price of groceries these days. Its the only reason I am on it. Was with Kogan mobile before but the reception (Vodafone) was not very good.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I think we have cheap pricing at all (there's been incremental shift but nothing hugely groundbreaking recently) but we are a relatively sparsely populated country with difficult topography which means we won't have the same economies of scale as some other countries there. It would be intersting to factor in population density to the comparison and see if that has any effect.

So NZ is currently 170 on the Wikipedia list of countries by density.

For a "similar" sampling I took from 160 to 180, the median came out at US$1.36, only two countries with higher costs were the Solomon Islands and South Sudan, both of which are impoverished hellholes.

Late to this, but think you'll find quiiiite a bit of difference between Solomon Islands and South Sudan.

Sudan last six months:

" fighting reportedly killed up to 9,000 and
forced millions of people out of their homes "

Solomon Islands last six months:

" Every year, researchers estimate, more than
20 people are killed or seriously injured when
one of the thousands of unexploded
World War II-era bombs left behind
by the U.S. and Japan is set off. "

Yes, Solomon Islands had a civil war but that's long over, and yes it's impoverished.

But to describe one of our closest, now most peaceful neighbours (3397kms) as a "hell hole" in the same breath as Sudan smacks of a sadly typical Kiwi parochialism.

  • Impoverished
  • Minimal infrastructure
  • Lowest per capita GDP in the world
  • Civil war and ethnic violence was not that long ago
  • No compulsory education and nearly half the countries kids have NO access to education.
  • Homosexuality is illegal
  • One of the highest rates of family/sexual violence in the world

It's absolutely a hellhole.

Never been there, but it appears to have been sold out to China now.
