And my current phone I bought in 2017 also has VoLTE support. It's just that no providers in NZ are planning on releasing the configuration for it, so it will probably never work on VoLTE. And right now, I can't make calls in VoLTE only areas.

@thelonepinetree let me guess a parallel imported handset?

What difference does it make, in this argument?

Updates.

VoLTE.

Bands.

Actual telco support(probably turn you down and blame the handset because you didn't buy it from them).

Think we can list the infinite reasons why this matters!

It makes no difference, it is my choice of what handset i'm using, just like what device i'm connecting to my or public wifi, or a provider's network! It's using standards for a reason, so things are interoperable. I pay the provider a subscription fee for a standard GSM service, I expect that it works, which means provider needs to supply the configuration.

I might have a parallel imported device, or i might have an "approved" device, but i might have wanted to wipe the bloated OS and installed a clean Android. Do you have any conflict of interest that you're defending the mobile providers' fight to keep the limited choice for their consumers?

@thelonepinetree Then don't complain when network services / features do not work like VoLTE

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I don't get your problem. I'm all for transparency and interoperability. You, on the other hand, seem to be just fine to be dictated to and follow like sheep, without questioning when something is not right.

I don't like regulation, but when stuff like this happens, I think it's justified.

@thelonepinetree I don't have a problem as I have a handset that is carrier approved and tested for VoLTE

Carriers do a lot of testing before releasing a handset to market to make sure features do work as they should

But what is "not right" exactly?

Perhaps the OP title sums it up: "NZ Government spends $115 million on 450 new cell towers useless to thousands of mobile devices", which boils down the the network operators not participating in provisioning configuration sharing.

If it was my choice I would give 24 months notice and say 3G / WCDMA is going bye bye so the spectrum can be used for 4G / 5G only

But the carriers should only be selling handsets that work with VoLTE and support the main 4G bands in New Zealand 700 , 900, 1800, 2100Mhz

what about 850, 2300 or 2600!
