I bought my daughter a phone from here - it didn't say "4G/VoLTE" when I bought it, so I emailed them to ask and they confirmed it is 4G/VoLTE enabled (and now the product page specifically calls it out)

What alarms me a little though is that 2Degrees texted her to the other day to say "Your phone isn't VoLTE compatible".

Does anyone know how 2D check this? I assume they are just looking at IMEI or similar, not actually verifying if the phone has ever made a 4G call? (Apologies if I am taking this thread in a direction it's not supposed to go, please delete this post if so)

Just to followup on this - I did some more tests/research and figured pretty quickly that the phone DID NOT support VoLTE at all, despite the pages and seller telling me it did. I'd sent a few emails to the effect of "If this phone stops working when the 3G shutdown happens, and I'm 99% sure it will, I expect my money back" and they'd replied to say "Let's see what happens"

BUT Tone Down Tech got back to me a week ago with some news - they have a software update available for her phone!  They offered to send me a returns bag which was nice, but I said can I just do it myself? So they sent me the software and instructions, and I did it last night.  They told me it'd wipe all the data on the phone, so I backed that up prior.  It was quick and painless upgrade, and post the upgrade the phone now properly supports VoLTE.  I can ring it and it doesn't drop back to 3G anymore when on a call.

So, very happy my daughter's dumb phone will live on until we think she's ready to have a cheap smartphone.

Thought I was immune to the impacts of the shut down, but my Huawei p30 apparently can't make volte calls on 2degrees.

Anyone else still using a p30 and got a workaround?  Looks like the p30 volte works on spark based on some googling?

That's quite an old phone - 2019, apparently: https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_p30-9530.php

You may need to upgrade your phone, or change to Spark (if it works with them). Maybe pick up a Spark prepay SIM and see what happens?

Yeap, old is accurate. Was thinking that about a spark sim.

2degrees have now announced shutdown starts from the 14/12

" 2degrees says it will begin shutting its 3G mobile network on December 14, starting with 100 rural celltowers."

" One NZ, which has previously said its shutdown will begin by year’s end, this afternoon told the Herald its first towers will now be shut on January 20 "

Not sure but this topic might need its own thread

That's interesting One delayed it, considering they announced recently they had already upgraded every tower to 4g at least

They are re-farming the frequencies over to 4G/LTE.

Received a few days ago from One NZ: "Our reporting shows you may be experiencing dropped calls because your phone does not support all our mobile network frequencies. If this is an issue, we recommend upgrading your phone for optimal call experience. Find out more at one.nz/4Gcalls"

This is the press release:

2degrees begins 3G shutdown

2degrees will start shutting off 3G services on December 14, the telco has confirmed. 2degrees initially announced its intention to decommission 3G in July 2023. The shutdown will remove the 3G service from operation, and see Kiwi mobile users connected to the more modern 4G and 5G networks.

2degrees CEO Mark Callander says that 2degrees 3G services on around 100 sites will be decommissioned this month – all of these are part of the Rural Connectivity Group network.

“3G usage on RCG sites is actually rather small, with most people connecting via 4G so the impact to anyone still using 3G to connect in those areas is likely to be minimal. We have been urging customers to get ready for this shutdown, and the time to take action is now.”

Callander said people can text ‘3G’ to short code 550 for details relating to their phone’s 4G capability, with links to get more information if they need to make changes.

“We have been repeatedly communicating with all impacted customers, but human nature being what it is, some people will be waiting until the last minute to upgrade an old device. Please check your device, and replace it if you need to.”

Callander said 2degrees started selling 4G handsets in 2018, and has only sold 4G and 5G handsets since mid 2022. 4G devices start from just $69.

He says that 2degrees has undertaken a major upgrade of its sites over the past few years, enhancing 4G and adding 5G equipment.

“3G is an old technology now, and it’s being closed down internationally. The next generation of mobile services – 4G and 5G - are designed for modern mobile use, whether that’s streaming, video calls, or running multiple apps and programmes all requiring data.

“Modern networks need to be faster, more resilient, and more sustainable. 3G simply can’t deliver the performance New Zealand now relies on. By retiring this legacy technology, we can focus on strengthening and expanding our 4G and 5G networks which carry the vast majority of today’s mobile traffic.”

Callander urges people to check in with friends, whānau, neighbours and colleagues, or anyone who may be using a 3G-reliant phone or device like a tablet, medical alarm or security alarm, to make sure they’re ready for the transition.

Further 3G services will be decommissioned early in 2026, 2degrees says.

Old devices can be recycled at 2degrees stores, or people can get more information from RE:MOBILE at https://remobile.org.nz/

Sorry, not totally sure how this all works, but what does it mean for the MORAN sites with One, ie, 2d couldn’t just start reframing the 3G frequencies to 5g without One getting on board, right? So wouldn’t it just pay to wait?

@Aucklandjafa The MoRAN sites are SDR cells and they still use the mobile carriers bit of spectrum so they can just refarm the 3G to 4G

@grantius OneNZ & SparkNZ will be watching very very closely what happens with 2degrees and making sure it doesn't blow up in media frenzy

Good to see someone bringing it forward instead of pushing it down the road further.

IMO it would be good to have it done before xmas so that people who are giving junk new phones as gifts don't have a week or 2 of them working and then find they fail.

I got a txt some weeks ago about a planned outage in my home area in North canty (while at work in the city) for 2D.

There's a raft of planned outages for 3 day gaps all over the place listed at present. Presumably related to reconfiguring in readiness.

2nd day of window last night and noticed connection bur 0bars. Surprised Facebook didn't light up with complaints :)
