I'm only just starting my exploration so there's much I yet have to learn and I'm hoping one of you can point me in the right direction.

In the next few months, my partner and I will be purchasing a lifestyle block around 1.5-3ha somewhere between Puhoi/Warkworth and Mangawhai. A few properties we've already looked at, especially those back into the hills, have only weak cell-phone reception, at best, 1-2 bars on Telecom (haven't even checked on the landlines - they're probably not up to much either). Given the work we'll be doing, we'll need good cell-phone coverage over most of the property. And we're prepared to spend a bit of money to get it.

I've read a few past discussions on geekzone and checked the website of a few cell phone 'booster' companies/products but they all seem to be limited to boosting the signal around the home, maximum about 1000sqm from the booster. I've also read a couple of posts that seem to suggest that, in Aotearoa, the ISPs (and, indeed, the law) won't allow repeaters or boosters with the level of coverage I'm looking for. In other words, basically, I'm shot. Is that correct?

If so, are there (legal) workarounds? For example, might I be able to approximate by putting separate boosters in, say, a house, a barn/shed, a box in the middle of (what I fondly imagine will be) an orchard? (I don't even know how these things work - would they each create separate channels that might interfere with each other?) Am I talking about something like a mini-tower?

Anyone able to offer useful thoughts? Point me in useful directions? Any firms that can be trusted to provide good advice - and not just try and sell you something?

If you can get some fibre in then: https://www.vodafone.co.nz/press-release/vodafone-trials-coverage-and-capacity-in-a-box/

If you can get decent fixed line, then Vodafone xDSL + several: https://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile/3g-sure-signal/ see if you can still get the more powerful Business version.

Also mind you that not all "boosters" are certified/allowed to be used in this country - only 2degrees and Spark have certified boosters. Vodafone Sure Signal is a "pico cell".

Does it need to be a phone or do you just need point to point communications with people on the property?

Many thanks all. I'll explore these leads further.

timmmay, it needs to be phone.

raytaylor, I'll check that, later, thanks.

Marcus, thanks, aware of that - the obvious (legal) options won't be sufficient (at least, not on present dreams- which, of course, may have to be revised in the context of reality).

coffeebaron, thanks. I'm not yet familiar with the quality of fixed lines around that region. People there I've spoken with say 'it's fine' but when I ask them about bandwidth, speed, etc they don't seem to have any idea so I'm assuming for the moment it's not much better than standard rural. What I've read so far about Sure Signal' suggests that range is quite limited, certainly not, say, a radius of 200-300m. The fibre option (leading to a 'small cell') is a thought if only because the internet work that she and I do requires broadband (preferably with a high cap). Here my ignorance shows though; would fibre connection at the house require road cabling from a source however many kilometres distant? Or are you thinking of something that would connect to and draw from the fixed phone line at the road?

raytaylor's suggestion to google 'femtocell' was useful, thanks, learned a lot - although had I picked up freitasm's reference to 'pico cell' earlier, it would also have helped. Thanks guys. I think that's the direction my thoughts should go in when the time comes. Let's hope that Telecom (sorry: 'Spark' - what a joke...) catch up or some up with something that competes with Sure Signal (I don't have much time for Vodafone)...

If you go with Spark, I can help sort you out with a Cel-Fi booster solution.

As you haven't purchased a property yet, it would pay dividends to really check the broadband coverage of where you are planning to buy. Look at the chorus maps and strike out potential properties accordingly. At least 5mbps on the map for Vodafone sure signal. But also check for mobile coverage as probably won't be required. If you are planning on moving to a lifestyle block but still demand 'town' level of mobile and internet you will be saving yourself a lot of time and money and frustration.

Also ASK what the connection is like. Our house shows >5Mb/s on the maps but doesn't get it most of the time due to congestion.

jonB and andrewNZ, you're both dead right - a set of questions I definitely ask as we search. The hardest part of it of course, is the trade-offs. We're into permaculture, want to be as self-sufficient as possible (including off the grid), surrounded by trees and birds and yet able to access high quality mobile and broadband services. No pleasing some...! I appreciate everyone's advice, thanks.
